For a lot of central Iowa businesses, October through December is the busiest stretch of the year. Client visits. End-of-year events. Staff coming and going. The office that was quiet in August is running at a different pace now, and the cleaning schedule that was adequate in the summer shows its gaps when the building is full.

She is part of our West Des Moines team and she is phClean Shine Certified. Before she ever cleaned a home independently she trained hands-on across 14 to 16 real homes alongside an experienced trainer, then spent a minimum of three more months in supervised coaching before fully graduating. By the time she was in a client's home alone, she had already proven she could meet the phClean standard in skill, in care, and in values.

Consistency gets built into the person before she ever knocks on your door. Not hoped for afterward.

The mudroom is the room that decides how the rest of the house does in October.

Everything that comes in from outside lands there first: cleats, wet shoes, backpacks, the dog, whatever the yard contributed to the doormat. If the mudroom has a system and stays clear, the mess stays contained. If it does not, October distributes itself through the rest of the house by Wednesday every week.

A few things that make the October mudroom manageable:

Designate a spot for everything that comes in the door and be specific about it. Shoes on the mat, backpacks on the hooks, coats hung rather than dropped. Vague rules do not survive a busy school-week morning. Specific spots do.

Keep a small brush or boot scraper at the exterior door. Thirty seconds of scraping before the shoes come inside is worth ten minutes of floor cleaning later.

Clear the mudroom floor completely once a week, even if everything goes right back where it was. Sweeping and mopping a clear floor takes two minutes. Sweeping and mopping around six pairs of shoes takes considerably longer and still does not get done right.

On recurring visits, our technicians clean the floors throughout the home including entryways and mudrooms. The habits between visits just keep the space from becoming the source of the rest of the house.

Meet Gabbie, one of our Ames techs.

She’s been with phClean for four months, and her favorite part of the job is easy to spot. It’s the compliments from clients. She says they put a smile on her face and make the harder days worth it.

Her best one so far came from a sorority house she cleans. She was told “she’s already part of the family,” and it made her whole year. Her favorite memory comes from the same place, walking in for the first time and being welcomed right away.

Outside of work she’s playing board games, thrifting, walking, or babysitting when she has the time. A Culver’s burger is her go-to, the Greatest Showman soundtrack is on repeat, and she collects trinkets, especially anything mini. She’s also a licensed esthetician. Ask her coworkers for one word and you’ll hear Energetic.

Sariah has been vacuuming carpets long enough to take real pride in a clean line.

That smile at the end of the video is not for the camera. It is the same look she has every time she finishes a room and it looks exactly the way it should. The shark fins in the carpet are a small thing. They are also proof that someone worked the room carefully, in the right direction, and did not cut corners on the way out.

The holidays are six weeks away.

That sentence lands differently depending on whether the house is already handled or not.

For the families on a recurring phClean schedule heading into November, it is not a stressful sentence. The house is in good shape on a consistent rhythm. When Thanksgiving arrives, the guest bathroom is not a project. The kitchen is not starting from behind. The baseline is already where it needs to be because someone has been maintaining it every two weeks since September.

For everyone else, six weeks is still enough time. An initial deep clean gets the house to the right baseline, and recurring service from there means November arrives the way it should: something to look forward to, not something to catch up for.

phClean has been part of central Iowa long enough that some of our current clients were referred by clients who have since moved away.

That is what 20 years of showing up looks like. The word-of-mouth travels further than the marketing does, and it has since the beginning.

In the early years, phClean grew the way most honest businesses do: one client at a time, one referral at a time, one technician who showed up the same way every visit until a family trusted her with a key and told their neighbor to call.

The three offices, the 80-plus technicians, the 1,200 recurring clients, all of it grew from that same pattern. Sara built something worth telling your neighbor about, and central Iowa kept doing exactly that.

We share these moments because we think the story of where a company comes from matters. This one started in Ames in 2006 with a kitchen table and a belief that doing the work right was enough of a business plan. It still is.

"It is a relief knowing that someone we trust is in the house when we are gone."

That is Rachel, a recurring phClean client in Ames. She has dogs. She has been with phClean long enough that her technician knows the dogs by name and they know her.

That sentence, someone we trust in the house, is the thing we come back to when someone asks what makes phClean different. It is not a cleaning specification. It is a relationship that builds over visits until handing over the key is not something you think twice about.

It does not happen on the first visit. It builds because the same person comes back, knows the home, holds the same standard, and handles it the way you would want it handled if you were there.

October is a good time to deal with the things that have been running since spring and nobody has thought about since.

Ceiling fans switched direction in September for most households, which means the dust that accumulated on the blades all summer just got redistributed into the room. Run a dry cloth or a pillowcase over the blades before you call it done.

Vent covers and return air grilles collect dust and pet hair consistently, and most households check them once a year if that. A vacuum brush attachment or a damp cloth takes two minutes per vent and makes a real difference in what the forced air system is pushing around the house all fall and winter.

Window sills in October have usually seen six months of open-window traffic: pollen, insects, dust, and whatever the screens collected. A damp cloth before you close the windows for the season is worth the five minutes.

Baseboards along the floor in high-traffic areas accumulate a layer of grime that is invisible until you wipe one and see what comes off the cloth. Once a season is enough.

On deep cleans, our technicians handle ceiling fans, baseboards, window sills, and vents as part of the scope. On recurring visits, the standards stay maintained between those deeper sessions.
