Position: Assistant Manager

Location: Center Valley, PA

Are you a dynamic and motivated leader with a passion for hospitality and great food? Our client is a bustling American fare restaurant known for their warm atmosphere, excellent service, and high-quality menu. They are seeking an Assistant Manager who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is eager to help drive operational excellence and team performance.

Key Responsibilities:

Support the General Manager in overseeing daily operations of the front and back of house

Lead by example in delivering exceptional guest service and maintaining a welcoming atmosphere

Manage staff scheduling, training, and performance to ensure a productive and positive work environment

Monitor inventory, ordering, and vendor relationships to ensure consistent product quality and availability

Assist with financial performance tracking, including sales, labor, and cost control

Handle guest inquiries and resolve issues promptly and professionally

Maintain high standards for cleanliness, food safety, and compliance with health regulations

Qualifications:

2+ years of restaurant management or supervisory experience (preferably in casual dining or American cuisine)

Strong leadership and team-building skills

Ability to multitask and stay composed under pressure

Excellent communication and problem-solving abilities

ServSafe certification (preferred but not required)

Flexible availability, including nights, weekends, and holidays

Finding talent for a business can be challenging due to several reasons:

Competition: There is often intense competition among businesses to attract and hire top talent. Companies are vying for skilled individuals who possess the right qualifications, experience, and expertise. This competition can make it difficult to attract the most qualified candidates, especially in industries where the demand for talent outweighs the supply.

Skill shortages: Some industries or specific skill sets may experience a shortage of qualified professionals. Emerging technologies, niche expertise, or rapidly changing market demands can lead to a scarcity of individuals with the desired skills. This scarcity further intensifies the competition for talent.

Evolving job market: The job market is dynamic, and the needs and expectations of job seekers are continually evolving. Today's professionals often prioritize factors such as work-life balance, career growth opportunities, workplace culture, and a sense of purpose. Businesses need to align their offerings and employer branding with these expectations to attract and retain top talent.

Inefficient recruitment processes: Ineffective or inefficient recruitment processes can hinder the ability to find and secure talented individuals. Lengthy and convoluted hiring procedures, lack of clear communication, and delays in decision-making can deter qualified candidates or cause them to accept other offers before the business can make a decision.

I need to bring up “job hopping” for job candidates.

This is when you move from one employer to another within six months to a year. And then rinse and repeat for the next 1-3 years.

Many people did this during the height of the pandemic, and that’s completely understandable.

But here’s reality: employers then were scrambling for workers. If a job market downturn/recession occurs in a few months or even a few years (recessions always show up…and always go away), job hopping could hurt you.

Job opportunities shrink during recessions and if your job history shows a pattern of quick exits, employers may see you as a risky bet.

Of course, they may not. But be careful as you hop along, particularly if you’re a few years into your career and/or in a mid-level position. Steer clear of it entirely if you’re in a senior/leadership position.

Have you noticed an increase in job openings across various industries in the Lehigh Valley recently?

The Morning Call on May 5 reported that the Lehigh Valley had a “record number of jobs in March, according to the State Department of Labor & Industry.”

The article also reported:

“Seasonally adjusted nonfarm jobs in the Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton Metropolitan Statistical Area were at 392,500 for the month. It was an increase of 2.7 percent, or 10,200, over the year.

The unemployment rate for the MSA, which includes Carbon County, was 4 percent, compared to 4.7 percent in March 2022. Broken down, the rate for both Lehigh and Northampton counties was 3.7 percent, while Carbon’s was 4.2.percent

Among job supersectors, not seasonally adjusted, the largest over-the-month increases were in professional and business services, which increased by 700 to 51,500, and leisure and hospitality, up 900 to 34,200. The largest decline was in trade, transportation and utilities, down 700 to 94,500.”

Here are a few things I’ve recommended that my clients do to find great talent when great talent is hard to find -- in addition to hiring me to help them find them, of course:

¡ Offer fully remote positions (if possible).
· Be exceptionally transparent about pay rates in your job postings. I’m finding that my clients that do this have a much easier time finding great talent.
· Provide hefty – as in several hundred – or even thousands – of dollars in referral fees for current employees when a referral candidate of theirs is hired (and sticks around for several months).
