DAY OF THE SEAFARER 2026: Carrying world trade. Carrying the risks
To mark this year’s Day of the Seafarer, we asked Captain Eduard Borcelas what the theme “Carrying world trade. Carrying the risks” means to him, and what it takes to keep people, cargo and operations safe at sea. Here is what he shared — in his own words:
Carrying more than cargo
“Seafarers keep global trade moving, but behind every voyage are risks such as rough weather, navigational challenges and long periods away from our families. While we transport cargo, we also carry the responsibility of protecting lives, the vessel and the environment.”
Safety and responsibility at sea
“My biggest responsibilities are ensuring the safety of the crew, the vessel and the cargo. This means proper voyage planning, compliance with regulations, maintaining the ship’s seaworthiness, and making sound decisions in all conditions.”
Managing risk together
“Good communication is the foundation of safe operations. We hold regular meetings, toolbox talks, drills and risk assessments, and I encourage every crew member to speak up about safety concerns. Managing risk is a shared responsibility on board.”
Teamwork under pressure
“Teamwork and trust are essential. When people communicate clearly, follow procedures, and trust each other’s abilities, we can overcome challenges safely and effectively.”
A message to fellow seafarers
“Thank you for your dedication, professionalism and sacrifices. Stay safe, look after one another, and take pride in the important role you play in keeping the world connected.”
Today, we recognise the vital role seafarers play in global trade and in keeping communities connected across the world. Thank you to all seafarers — at Wilson and beyond.
