🌏 AWE Mentorship: Learning, Stories and Solidarity in the Philippines

From September 10–14, AWE mentees, mentors and coaches came together in the Philippines for the programme’s midway gathering.

At the heart of the AWE Mentorship Programme is community exposure in Quezon City, the primary field-learning experience. Here, mentees bring their feminist analysis and political questions into conversations with women leaders from local government, academia and the community.

The immersion also featured an in-person collective storytelling session with the Feminist Media Lab. Together, the participants wove the individual narratives that began online into a photo book documenting the mentees’ journeys.

We are delighted to accompany this cohort as they continue their mentorship journey.

The Yogyakarta discussions ultimately returned to a fundamental question: what makes democracy resilient?

The answer is not one institution, one election or one political party. It is a combination of safeguards that reinforce one another: independent institutions that constrain power; political parties capable of surviving beyond individual leaders; civil society that can mobilize citizens; media capable of scrutinizing power; international democratic networks that raise the costs of authoritarian behavior; and citizens who see democracy as something worth defending and proactively doing so.

Xi Jinping will soon visit India for the BRICS summit and the host country can be expected to produce some striking images.

At present, BRICS reflects a clear fault line among its members. India and Brazil have repeatedly blocked statements and initiatives aimed at confronting the West. This year, as host, India is likely to ensure that the summit produces no explicitly anti-Western message. Next year, however, China will take over the presidency. Beijing is openly seeking a world order no longer dominated by the West and appears convinced that long-term trends are moving in precisely that direction.
