On International Fact-Checking Day (April 2, 2026) conducted jointly with cofact Thailand, Vanessa Steinmetz, Head of FNF Thailand, delivered welcome remarks highlighting why fact-checking is at the core of the foundation’s work.

She emphasized how falsified information can shape societies, distort public discourse, and influence global conversations. More importantly, she underscored that fact-checking is not just a technical skill; it is rooted in the fundamental values of liberalism: to nurture informed decision making process.

Discover why fact-checking matters now more than ever and why it remains a priority for the foundation.

On April 1, 2026, FNF Thailand, together with Cofact Thailand, brought partners and affiliates into an immersive learning experience with Ray’s Blog—an interactive game created by Noa Horiguchi.

Using a gamified approach, participants stepped into a Japanese manga-style mystery, where they uncovered fake information and traced the source behind it.

More than just a game, the experience strengthened essential skills in fact-checking, verification, and critical thinking—tools that are increasingly vital in today’s information landscape.

On March 27 2026, member parties and affiliates of the Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats (CALD), convened to confront the growing issue of violence against women in politics ( ) and to emphasize a shared commitment: empowering more women political leaders to strengthen democratic resilience.

On his welcome remarks, Moritz Kleine-Brockhoff, Head of FNF Asia, also highlighted this challenge is not confined to one region. He pointed to developments in Hamburg, where public protests have erupted following a disturbing case involving abuse targeting a prominent actor’s wife—underscoring how digital violence is reshaping threats against women globally. He also emphasized the importance of the issue for the foundation, which just released a series of papers on the topic with case studies across the world.

Liberal Party’s Chair and Representative Leila de Lima also noted, “When violence targets a woman because she participates in politics, it is not merely a personal matter, it is an attempt to suppress democratic participation.”

From Taiwan, Michelle Wu of the Democratic Progressive Party called for stronger condemnation of gender-based political attacks, even as Taiwan leads the region in women’s representation.

Meanwhile, V Srivarathanabul, Democratic Party spokesperson and MP candidate in Thailand, shared her powerful aspiration: to be recognized as “a person” not defined by gender and expressed appreciation for spaces like CALD that amplify women’s voices.

Ending violence against women in politics is not just about protection; it is about safeguarding and strengthening democratic foundations.

Democracy in an Era of Global Power Division

Democracies have increased overall across the 1980–2026 period. But what more striking is not expansion, but . The global landscape is increasingly divided between democracies and authoritarian , with fewer countries remaining in the “gray zone.”

The contraction of hybrid regimes suggests that states no longer like to remain in the middle. Instead, they are moving decisively in one direction: either consolidating into “free” systems or backsliding into “not free” governance.

, however, is not built overnight nor is . Both are shaped by long-term institutional, political, and societal forces. Here engagement remains critical. Supporting countries in the middle remains a strategic priority, as these states represent the most contestable political terrain in an era of intensifying global power competition.

Amidst this environment, disengagement is not a neutral choice. It is important to ensure that more countries move toward democratic consolidation rather than authoritarian regression.

The future of democracy will be decided in these middle-ground states. What kind of support and engagement do you think makes the biggest difference?
