This weekend my advice is directed toward potential Clients of recruitment and staffing agencies:
1. Be sure to accurately weigh up the cost of using a recruitment company versus searching yourself or getting your personnel to search for you; include in this, business that won't be generated, customer concerns that remain unanswered, time wasted on the wrong hire etc. The single biggest reason to use a staffing agency should be time, it is money after all!.
2. Make us come and see you - we should take your business seriously enough to do so and, ultimately, we will represent you; take a look at us!
3. Initially use more than one agency - we are expensive, but we are paid on results, so why not set a few to the task to maximize your chances of great results? But once you have the right one, negotiate a bulk hire discount and form a strong relationship with us - should we let you down, start again.
4. You need and want great employees, so have a separate budget for recruitment versus wages - that is, factor in the getting as a different cost (and effort) to the keeping.
Recruitment agents are like realtors, you don't want to use them but if you use the right one the results tend to speak for themselves.
