A ship rigger is a skilled maritime tradesperson responsible for maintaining, repairing, and adjusting the complex system of ropes, cables, wires, and spars that support and operate a sailing vessel’s masts and sails. They specialize in heavy manual lifting devices, cordage, and aloft operations.
The duties are divided between two main environments: Alloft/Deck maintenance andHeavy lifting/Cargo operations
1. Aloft & Deck Rigging Duties (Sailing Operations)
Working Aloft: Regularly climbing high into the rigging (masts, yards, and tops) in all weather conditions to inspect, repair, and grease.
Sail Handling: Assisting in setting, furling, and reefing the large square sails, which involves heavy ropes and pulleys
Standing Rigging: Maintaining the fixed ropes and wires (stays, shrouds, and ratlines) that support the masts structurally.
Running Rigging: Operating and maintaining the adjustable ropes and lines used to control the yards (horizontal spars) and sails, such as halyards, braces, and sheets
Traditional Craftsmanship: Completing detailed, specialized work by hand, including rope splicing, serving, seizing, and leatherwork.
2. Port & Cargo Operations
Load Handling: Attaching, securing, and detaching heavy cargo, materials, or provisions.
Gear Setup: Selecting and utilizing the correct rigging gear, such as blocks, winches, hoists, and chains.
Lifting Operations: Maneuvering heavy loads safely and efficiently through confined spaces or over obstacles using cranes or manual pulley systems.
Equipment Inspection: Checking lifting gear, slings, and cables for wear, damage, or structural integrity before every use.
3. Safety & Maintenance Administration
Hazard Management: Enforcing occupational health and safety procedures, especially when handling heavy loads or working at dangerous heights.
Record Keeping: Maintaining records of equipment usage, maintenance logs, and ordering necessary supplies.
