Recruiter Notes 2/3: How to make a killer CV
The first thing to do when developing a good CV is understand the roles that one can actually successfully do in a specific Market.
Afterwards, one can tailor different CVs for each type of role. For example, let’s say one can take on the role of Agency Recruiter, Internal Recruiter and HRBP. If this person wants to explore all options, it must have three different CVs, each one highlighting different things.
CV’s are 2D, like pictures - they have a hard time summarising a lot of content.
Secondly, a CV most be fluid, always improving with each search, each interview. And most importantly a CV is always 98% ready to send out - the last 2% being the Executive Summary, the ‘hook’, the most important part and that will be explained better below.
Each CV must have at least 5 areas:
Personal and contact details
Executive Summary *
Professional Experience *
Academics Studies
Languages and other
Don’t worry too much about length, as long as you have Quality of Content in all areas and a bit of common sense in form, you will be fine!!!
This said, there are two areas that require especial attention:
Executive Summary:
4 or 5 bullets that DIRECTLY connect your skills and experience with the job description you are applying for.
If you can’t make an easy link... don’t force it, go back to searching for other job descriptions and opportunities!
Professional Experience:
Beyond the obvious title, responsibilities and dates, include as well details of your organisation, direct team and most importantly ACHIEVEMENTS (objective Wins that illustrate what you are actually bringing to the table).
Combining a strong CV (well structured and tailored to a specific job opportunity) with a fast application (see Recruiter Notes 1/3) is a powerful combo and the secret recipe for being called to interview!!
