Recruiter Notes 3/3: How to Interview
You have identified the perfect job opportunity for you, sent out your CV with amazing timing, you naturally properly followed up the next day with a nice call inquiring if it was received and if it the opportunity is still open (always a good chance to get more info about the job too). You got the interview!

Congratulations, but... now what? There are at least a couple interviews separating you from that dream job.

First advice is to keep sending out to other opportunities. May feel odd initially but having other things happening will not only increase your confidence, but also keep the Recruiters echoing how amazing you are - 'currently about to receive offers from several companies'. Whoa.. Amazing candidate!

Secondly you need to find out as much as you can about this company, the interviewer, the job. Print the Job Description and scribble everything there.

Turn the page and list at least 7 questions. Close your eyes, it shouldn't be difficult to imagine yourself doing the work (after all you made a good match and the recruiter agreed by calling you in), what kind of problems would you face? how would you solve them?

You probably don't have enough information at this point to answer but about this time, questions should be piling up in your head. Write them down and make sure to ask about this in the interview.

Someone that goes in to interview with lots of questions, is someone interested, practical, with can do attitude and... most importantly someone who has more information when it is their time to speak and talk about their own experience. By now, you know everything about the job and can easily highlight past experiences and achievements to the Recruiter in front of you.

Lastly, don't miss the chance of asking about how the Recruiter felt you match for this role. You might have one last chance there to explain something or clear up a misunderstanding. Also remember when relating past experiences with this job, always minimize differences and emphasise similarities.

All the above you can and should own up to for each interview, the rest would most likely be down to chemistry, luck and other things you can't

Recruiter Notes 2/3: How to make a killer CV

The first thing to do when developing a good CV is understand the roles that one can actually successfully do in a specific Market.

Afterwards, one can tailor different CVs for each type of role. For example, let’s say one can take on the role of Agency Recruiter, Internal Recruiter and HRBP. If this person wants to explore all options, it must have three different CVs, each one highlighting different things.

CV’s are 2D, like pictures - they have a hard time summarising a lot of content.

Secondly, a CV most be fluid, always improving with each search, each interview. And most importantly a CV is always 98% ready to send out - the last 2% being the Executive Summary, the ‘hook’, the most important part and that will be explained better below.

Each CV must have at least 5 areas:

Personal and contact details
Executive Summary *
Professional Experience *
Academics Studies
Languages and other
Don’t worry too much about length, as long as you have Quality of Content in all areas and a bit of common sense in form, you will be fine!!!

This said, there are two areas that require especial attention:

Executive Summary:

4 or 5 bullets that DIRECTLY connect your skills and experience with the job description you are applying for.

If you can’t make an easy link... don’t force it, go back to searching for other job descriptions and opportunities!

Professional Experience:

Beyond the obvious title, responsibilities and dates, include as well details of your organisation, direct team and most importantly ACHIEVEMENTS (objective Wins that illustrate what you are actually bringing to the table).

Combining a strong CV (well structured and tailored to a specific job opportunity) with a fast application (see Recruiter Notes 1/3) is a powerful combo and the secret recipe for being called to interview!!

Recruiter Notes 1/3: How to search

The ‘job’ of those who recruit, be it an Agency Recruiter an HR department or just part of the job scope of a Manager/ Director, always follows the same logic - the objective is to find the best person for the job and as quickly as possible.

Besides recruiting, any Director has many other important tasks to attend to and a Recruiter (internal or Agency) has many other positions to fill at every given time.

Assuming for a second that we are in a candidate rich Market (usually the case), the one who recruits will receive how many replies for each single job post? 50? 100? 200?

As we just saw, the focus and process of those who recruit is usually closing the position and moving on to the next, so this is our first important lesson - The first goal of the candidate is, TO BE ONE OF THE FIRST WHO APPLY!

You got it right, IT IS A RACE. What happens when you have an overwhelmed recruiter on the other side?? What happens when he/ she finds good profiles in the first 10, 20, 30 CV’s??? That’s right. As soon as the recruiter has 4 ou 5 good candidates, these ones are called for interview and the focus changes to other jobs or tasks. Those who come after can potentially get into the mix but the odds are not as good. Ideally, BE ONE OF THE FIRST TO APPLY AND SEND IN A GREAT CV TO IMPROVE YOUR ODDS!!!
