We like to say that exceptional EAs are kings of soft skills! Maybe that’s the reason why it’s so hard to find the right fit and assess them properly (but seems we cracked the code!).

Think about it - a great EA needs to be able to communicate effectively with you and your team, anticipate your needs, and handle difficult situations with grace and professionalism. They need to be able to adapt to changing circumstances, and possess the emotional intelligence to navigate complex interpersonal dynamics.

So, if you're in the market for an EA, make sure you're evaluating their soft skills just as much as their technical abilities.

First, there's the gofer. They require direct instructions for even the most basic tasks, so while they may save you some time, you'll still have to do most of the thinking for them.

Next, there's the administrative assistant. They can handle many tasks well, as long as there's a clear process in place. However, they tend to shy away from tasks where success isn't guaranteed or where they need to use their own discretion.

Finally, there's the executive assistant. They thrive in ambiguity and are highly autonomous, taking unclear assignments and figuring out how to make them work. They need context and communication from you to make good decisions on your behalf, but with that, they can truly help you leverage your time. Any ideas, which one you should aim on hiring?

Congratulations on your decision to hire an executive assistant and take back your time! But before you start celebrating, let's talk about the importance of a trial period.

I hate to burst your bubble, but your life won't magically transform the moment your new assistant signs the offer letter. It takes time to build a great working relationship, set expectations, and get into a rhythm. That's why it's crucial to have a realistic mindset and approach from the get-go.

I've seen too many working relationships crumble due to unrealistic expectations, such as hiring the cheapest assistant, expecting instant results without training, or thinking you don't have enough work for them.

The harsh truth is that the trial period may not be smooth sailing at first, but that's okay! Take the time to invest in building a strong foundation and communication with your assistant. Be patient, provide clear feedback, and work together to find the best ways to support each other. And bosses, remember that being involved in your assistant's onboarding process is crucial for their success.

In the end, if you want a great assistant, you must be a great leader. So embrace the trial period, set realistic expectations, and watch your working relationship thrive!

Congratulations, you’ve decided to hire an assistant and win back up to 80% of your time. Your life will become a seamless journey and you won’t need to worry about anything ever again.

I hate to disappoint you: an assistant will not magically change your life the very first day they sign the offer. That’s why it’s crucial you set realistic expectations (especially for yourself) from the very beginning, even before starting to look for the right person.
I’ve seen too many relationships dying when they didn’t need to because of these misconceptions:

1. Pay. Hire the cheapest assistant you can find
2. No training. Throw a bunch of work at them when they join
3. Instant win. You don’t need to train your assistant
4. Workload. You don’t have enough work for your assistant

The harsh truth is that after hiring an assistant it will most probably worse off at the beginning. Be patient and invest in building your relationships with your assistant. Trust me, it will pay off pretty soon. And always remember: if you want to have a great assistant you must be a great leader.
