📋 Residence and work are two separate things — and confusing them is the most common mistake foreigners make in Poland.

🛂 Your residence basis answers: do I have the right to BE in Poland?
That's your visa, residence card, or visa-free stay.

💼 Your work basis answers: do I have the right to WORK here?
That's a work permit, a declaration entered in the register, or a status that includes access to the labour market.

Why it matters:

You can have a perfectly valid residence card and still be working illegally, because the work basis is missing or expired. You can also hold a work permit and have no legal right to be in the country.

And here's the part people miss most often: the two documents have different expiry dates. One can run out while the other is still valid.

What to do: write down both dates. Set a reminder a month before each one. Don't assume that if one document is fine, the other is too.

⏳ You have 60 days to collect your residence card — and this deadline catches a lot of people out.

Here's how it works. Once you receive a positive decision, the voivodeship office notifies you that your residence card is ready for collection. From that moment you have 60 days.

If you don't collect it in time:
❌ The temporary residence permit is not granted
❌ The card is invalidated
❌ You have to submit a new application from the beginning — with all the waiting again

People miss this for very ordinary reasons: they moved and the letter went to the old address, they were working long shifts, or they simply didn't realise the notification was time-limited.

What to do: after a positive decision, check your correspondence and your MOS account regularly. Don't wait for someone to remind you — nobody will.

💰 Minimum wage in Poland goes up from 1 January 2027.

The Council of Ministers confirmed the new rates in September. From January:

✅ 4 950 PLN gross per month — up from 4 806 PLN
✅ 32,30 PLN gross per hour

Two things worth knowing:

If you work on an hourly contract, the hourly minimum is what applies to you — the monthly figure is for full-time employment contracts.

"Gross" is the contract amount. What lands in your account is lower, after tax and contributions. Always compare gross with gross when you look at offers.

Your contract should reflect the new rate from January. If it doesn't, that's a question worth asking your employer.
