LUMS - Mushtaq Ahmad Gurmani School of Humanities & Social Sciences Official page of the Mushtaq Ahmad Gurmani School of Humanities and Social Sciences, LUMS

Welcome to the Mushtaq Ahmad Gurmani School for Humanities and Social Sciences at LUMS. We are the largest school at LUMS and pride ourselves on our world class faculty and thriving student life. In an age where ‘marketability’ has become a buzzword, driving many young men and women into the professions right after high school, we focus on providing our students with a broad-based education that l

ays a solid foundation for them to build their lives and careers on. Trained at leading universities of the world, and deeply engaged with local realities, our faculty members have transformed the way social sciences and humanities are taught in Pakistan. Their passion and commitment is reflected in the vibrant intellectual culture of the school, and translates into teaching that is truly transformative. Students start the programme by developing strong conceptual foundations across a range of subjects before graduating on to advanced, specialized courses that only our faculty can deliver. Equipped with an excellent liberal arts education, with specializations in economics, political science, sociology, anthropology, history, and literature in English, along with several joint majors, our students go on to stellar careers in academia, policy-making, politics, media, corporate sector, third sector, government and international organizations. However, as proud as we are of our students’ accomplishments, what gives us even greater satisfaction is the sensitivity, empathy and thoughtfulness that we are able to impart to them. Arriving just after high school, our students step into the world four years later as mature, engaged and reflective citizens, prepared to serve in the highest offices in public and private sectors.

Congratulations to Mustafa Zeshan (BSc Hons. Economics, Class of 2025) on being awarded the prestigious Texas A&M Graduate Fellowship!

Mustafa will pursue his MS in Financial Economics at Texas A&M University.

Reflecting on his time at LUMS, Mustafa shares: "I spent four amazing years at MGSHSS, and it played a huge role in shaping who I am today. The experience goes beyond academics — it is the kind of place that pushes you to think differently, ask better questions, and stay curious. The exposure to so many perspectives helped me become more open-minded and confident in how I think and express ideas. What I value most though, is everything outside the classroom — the people, the conversations, the mentorship, and the overall environment that made those four years incredibly meaningful."

Congratulations, Mustafa, on this well-deserved recognition!
Best wishes for your MS programme and the exciting opportunities ahead.

We are proud to announce the publication of "A Confluence Between Iqbal and Leibniz: Self and Monad" by Dr. Muhammad Shabbir Ahsen, Associate Professor at the Mushtaq Ahmad Gurmani School of Humanities and Social Sciences, LUMS!

Published by Routledge, this work brings together two towering intellectual traditions — the Eastern philosophy of Allama Muhammad Iqbal, whose concept of khudi (selfhood) placed the individual ego at the centre of spiritual and philosophical life, and the Western metaphysics of Leibniz, whose theory of the Monad conceived of reality as composed of unique, indivisible units of consciousness.

In weaving these two philosophical worlds together, Dr. Ahsen invites us to explore profound questions about the nature of the self, identity, and the relationship between the individual and the universe.
