Tzu Chi is a non-profit charitable organization founded by the Buddhist nun Dharma Master Cheng Yen in Hualien, Taiwan in 1966. The master and her disciples sewed baby shoes, made candles and encouraged their followers to save 0.30 NT$ every day for charity. During her charity visits, Dharma Master Cheng Yen realized that many families became poor due to illness or vice versa. She concluded that,

to end poverty, illness needed to be taken care of first. She founded a free clinic in 1972 which provided medical services to the poor twice a week and then set out to build a hospital. Today, the Master’s compassion has resulted in the establishment of seven Tzu Chi hospitals across Taiwan. Shortly after a local Tzu Chi chapter was established in the Philippines in 1995, a group of Tzu Chi volunteers and local doctors held a free clinic in Baguio. Thus begun Tzu Chi’s medical work in the country. In 2007, the Tzu Chi Clinic was established in Bacood, Sta. It offered free dental and eye care services to indigent patients from across the Philippines. In 2016, the establishment underwent renovation and was renamed to Tzu Chi Eye Center. Today, it is a three-floor structure that features four operating rooms that are equipped with the most advanced ophthalmic technology, and diagnostic rooms as well as a roster of ophthalmologists from a variety of sub specializations.

Holistic Wellness Program

At the heart of everything we do at the Tzu Chi Eye Center is service with sincerity, compassion, and purpose. One way our staff continues to nurture this spirit is by learning from the teachings of Dharma Master Cheng Yen, whose wisdom guides us not only in our work, but in our daily lives.

As we begin the year, her teachings gently remind us to reflect and realign our intentions to serve not just with skill, but with heart. Through the Holistic Wellness Program, we were given the opportunity to reconnect with these values and bring them more deeply into our workplace and everyday actions.

We were honored to be guided by our notable speakers, the trio of siblings who are devoted Tzu Chi Volunteers, Sr. Chieh Fang, Sr. Caroline and Sr. Carolina, together with the support of our Uncles and Aunties and our CEO, Uncle Alfredo closed the morning with his unique inspiring stories . Their stories and lived experiences brought the teachings to life, reminding us that Dharma is not only something we hear, but something we practice through compassion and mindful action.

This gathering was more than a learning session; it was a moment of grounding, gratitude, and renewed purpose as we continue our shared mission of serving others with love and mindfulness.

Another Year, Another New Adventure!

This year marks a new adventure for the whole team after our tireless medical outreaches throughout the year. It was a chance for everyone to experience something different a well-deserved reward for all the hard work and dedication.

We are deeply grateful for the unending support from our management, Doctors and Uncles and Aunties who have always had our backs. We’re not only serving together — we’re growing together. With every outreach, every challenge, and every shared moment, we become more like family.

Our three-hours yacht adventure (or retreat) filled us with so much joy and laughter — A reminder that the heart of our journey isn’t just in what we do — but in how we pause, connect, and give thanks together.

This Morning-Through a simple and random “One Word Check-In,” our staff, volunteers, and doctors shared a glimpse of their hearts one word at a time. Some felt calm, others tired, a few grateful, and many simply happy. Each word, no matter how small, became an act of honesty, openness, and care.

It reminded us that while we give our best to heal others, we must also remember to look inward and care for ourselves. Joy in service isn’t just found in the work we do it blooms when we allow ourselves to pause, to breathe, and to truly feel the moment.

Providing access to health doesn’t end with physical care; it also means nurturing emotional and mental well-being our patients’ and our own. And though it may not directly speak of “mental health in catastrophes and emergencies,” these quiet acts of reflection and acknowledgment are already small but powerful steps toward inner peace and balance. 💚

Part 3 – Talk & Teaming Activities
Mental Health Month 2025
“Ikaw Muna, Pahinga Muna” – Self-Awareness Wellness Retreat

To wrap up our wellness retreat, the Tzu Chi Eye Center staff and volunteers gathered indoors for a heart-to-heart talk and fun teaming activities.

It was a time to pause and reflect — to listen not just to ourselves but also to each other. Laughter mixed with thoughtful sharing as everyone joined the group activities, building trust and strengthening connections within the team.

This closing session was a gentle but powerful reminder that mental wellness grows when we have a community to lean on — when we feel heard, supported, and connected. 💚

Part 2 – Sound Healing
Mental Health Month 2025
“Ikaw Muna, Pahinga Muna” – Self-Awareness Wellness Retreat

After the gentle Qigong outdoors, the Tzu Chi Eye Center staff and volunteers gathered indoors for a calming Sound Healing session.

Seated quietly on their mats, they let the soothing tones of the singing bowls and chimes wash over them a moment to slow their breathing, ease the mind, and simply be present.

This simple pause reminded us that caring for mental well-being often means stopping for a breath and truly listening — to the sounds, to the moment, and to ourselves. 💚

Part 1 – Qigong
Mental Health Month 2025
“Ikaw Muna, Pahinga Muna” – Self-Awareness Wellness Retreat

This morning, the Tzu Chi Eye Center staff and volunteers gathered in a peaceful outdoor space for a gentle Qigong session, guided with the support of MUNI Co-Wellness Recreational Center.

The fresh air, the slow movements, and the quiet rhythm of our breathing reminded us to slow down to loosen up, let the body breathe, and allow the mind to rest from the demands of work.
More than just a routine wellness exercise, it was a moment of "pahinga" our staff and volunteers truly deserve a pause made meaningful through mindfulness.

This simple outdoor practice echoed the heart of this year’s Mental Health Month: to pause, return to ourselves, and find awareness in the present moment. 💚

"Tzu Chi Eye Center-A Year of Wellness: Nurturing Body, Mind, and Spirit in 2024"

As we reflect on our holistic wellness program for 2024,
we recognize how important well-being is for our staff and our workplace culture. In 2025, we remain committed to fostering a supportive environment that prioritizes the physical, mental, and emotional health of every team member. Our holistic wellness program will address the diverse needs of our staff, ensuring that everyone feels valued and empowered.

This year’s teambuilding focused on overcoming obstacles to cultivate wisdom and compassion. The culmination of our monthly Holistic Wellness Program was embodied through this island experience. This journey has taught us to fuse together the mind, body and spirit by solving problems with empathy and insight, thanks to our guest speaker, Ma'am Mara Calagui, a registered psychologist from the AFP Medical Center, and the wisdom shared by Uncle Alfredo T. Li, CEO of Buddhist Tzu Chi Medical Foundation. Their guidance has helped us understand the dynamics of problem-solving and encouraged us to work together to achieve harmonious connections among ourselves and with our patients.

At Tzu Chi Eye Center, this experience has brought us closer through the activities prepared by our facilitators. We believe that our strength lies in the connections we build with one another and in acknowledging each team member's weaknesses. This isn't just about teamwork; it's about creating a community where everyone feels valued and understood. Together, we celebrate our successes and support each other through challenges, fostering a sense of belonging that enhances our workplace.

We also want to acknowledge the support of our management, who made this event possible, as well as our dedicated volunteers—Ahias, Aunties, and Uncles—who assisted and lovingly supported us throughout the activity.

The activity not only taught us to build a team as one in the workplace, ultimately, we are ONE FAMILY!

Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year! See you in 2025.
Greetings from your Tzu Chi Medical Foundation Family🎄🫶
