What if artificial intelligence could help us tackle the challenges posed by climate change? The ClimateGPT platform has been specifically conceived to study and propose ways to reduce the numerous impacts the climate crisis is having on the environment.
Behind the initiative is The Endowment for Climate Intelligence (ECI), an organization dedicated to promoting the responsible use of AI in the fight against climate change.
The group behind ClimateGPT says that the platform is powered by data from over 10 billion web pages and millions of academic articles. This corpus includes everything from research on climate change to information on extreme weather events and the entire United Nations Sustainable Development Goals program.

In its present configuration, the platform is already capable of performing a multitude of climate change-related tasks, such as synthesizing research from various disciplines, modelling potential future climate scenarios, identifying particular vulnerabilities of specific populations and infrastructures to climate change, and even assessing strategies for adapting to or mitigating climate change. In this area, the open-source platform could prove to be a valuable tool for researchers and political decision-makers.
Available in some 20 languages, the ClimateGPT project is entirely open source, which means that users can contribute to improving it over time. To try it out, you need to register directly via The Endowment for Climate Intelligence website.

Spanish football club Sevilla uses IBM’s Generative Artificial Intelligence platform to pick promising players. Their partnership led to the development of the Scout Advisor AI tool, which enhances recruitment and competitiveness. It lets scouters receive a curated candidate list based on specific player characteristics.
Artificial intelligence guides our decision-making, so seeing a sports team use this technology for recruitment is unsurprising. Soon, other sports will deploy the same application to improve their teams. As a result, it might improve the performance of your favorite groups, especially if they haven’t been winning championships lately!
This article will discuss how Sevilla FC will use AI to choose the best players better than ever. Later, I will share other ways sports are using artificial intelligence.

How does this football AI improve recruitment?
Scout Advisor combines Sevilla FC’s player evaluation database and IBM’s artificial intelligence. It uses natural language processing and foundational models to evaluate potential candidates.
Let’s say you’re a scouter, one of the people looking for new players for Sevilla. You input the type of player you need on Scout Advisor.
In response, the program examines quantifiable data, such as minutes played, goals scored, and text information from over 200,000 scouting reports. Then, it returns a list of suitable players.

The football club used artificial intelligence because the traditional methods are time-consuming and inconvenient. Previously, player recruitment relied on scouters choosing candidates by reading data and relying on subjective human observations.

This approach is becoming unacceptable for elite sports teams. They depend on multi-million-dollar investments and long-term contracts that require a return on investment.

Artificial intelligence enables Sevilla FC to choose the best more quickly and easily to gain a competitive edge. Here’s what the club president José María del Nido Carrasco said regarding his new program:

“This gives us a significant advantage in the player recruitment process and enables us to find the best players for our team and continue to improve our performance on the pitch.”
“We believe that this collaboration will have a positive impact not only for Sevilla FC but for the sports industry as a whole.”
“With this tool, Sevilla FC also demonstrates that technology is not just a goal but an intimate companion on the journey towards the future of our entity; it is part of its DNA.”

Other sports AI applications
You may not realize it, but modern sports use artificial intelligence for various purposes. For example, the World Rugby Association will use AI to prevent injuries.

After a highly successful year in cinema and television, 2024 looks to carry on the momentum and to our benefit. With intriguing and must-see releases coming left and right—it won’t matter which streaming service you’re subscribed to—here are 10 films and series to keep on your radar.

Hit Man
From an unlikely relationship formed by faking it till you make it, Glen Powell follows up on the highly successful “Anyone but You” with the steamy “Hit Man.”
“From Academy Award-nominated writer/director Richard Linklater, co-written and starring Glen Powell alongside Adria Arjona, comes Hit Man. Inspired by an unbelievable true story, a hit man meets his match in a client who steals his heart and ignites a powder keg of deception, delight, and mixed-up identities.”

Ripley
Andrew Scott is set to lead the upcoming eight-episode limited series as protagonist Tom Ripley.
“Scott’s Tom Ripley is a grifter scraping by in early ’60s New York. He’s hired by a wealthy industrialist to travel to Italy to try to convince the man’s dilettante son, Dickie Greenleaf (Johnny Flynn), to return home. Accepting the job is Tom’s first step into a complex life of deceit, fraud, and murder,” shares Netflix.

Avatar: The Last Airbender
“Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action I feel like is going to bring everything you know and love about the original series back to life,” said Gordon Cormier, who plays Aang. After a streak of successful live-action adaptations, let’s hope he’s correct for this one.

Kung Fu Panda 4
“After three death-defying adventures defeating world-class villains with his unmatched courage and mad martial arts skills, Po, the Dragon Warrior, is called upon by destiny to … give it a rest already. More specifically, he’s tapped to become the Spiritual Leader of the Valley of Peace.”
However, retirement doesn’t come so easy as the emerging villainess, Chameleon has their eyes on Po’s Staff of Wisdom, which would give her the power to re-summon all of Po’s past foes.
Jack Black reprises his role as the unlikely Dragon Warrior and is joined by Viola Davis and Awkwafina.

Dune: Part Two
“‘Dune: Part Two’ will explore the mythic journey of Paul Atreides as he unites with Chani and the Fremen while on a path of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Facing a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the known universe, he endeavors to prevent a terrible future only he can foresee.”
Timothée Chalamet is joined by Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Dave Bautista, Christopher Walken, and Léa Seydoux among others.

Japanese startup EX-Fusion will test a ground-based fusion laser to “capture, remove,” or push out” debris in the Earth’s orbit. It will concentrate nuclear fusion energy into a concentrated beam of heat and light to slow down space junk. Eventually, those objects will slow down enough to plunge into our atmosphere and disintegrate safely.
The latest space news doesn’t typically discuss the Earth’s space garbage problem. Yet, previous voyages into the great void have discarded so many rocket boosters, satellites, and other objects that they may obstruct further exploration. Fortunately, Japan may clear our atmosphere again and enable everyone to explore outer space.
This article will discuss how the Japanese company will use its space junk laser. Later, I will share other space refuse disposal methods.

How will the space junk laser work?
EX-Fusion will install its high-powered fusion laser at Canberra, Australia’s EOS Space Systems facility. The Debrief says its project will have two phases.
First, it will look for debris smaller than 10 cm. Second, it will fire a ground-based laser to decelerate and eliminate debris so that our atmosphere can burn them into dust.
EX-Fusion uses diode-pumped solid-state (DPSS) lasers to apply pulsed energy to interstellar debris. Researchers initially developed this technology to build and power the world’s first laser fusion nuclear reactor.

Laser fusion involves irradiating a powerful laser beam onto a hydrogen fuel pellet to generate a high-pressure implosion that triggers a nuclear fusion reaction.

“The power of a laser for destroying space junk is an order of magnitude lower than for nuclear fusion, but they share technical challenges, such as controlling them via special mirrors,” EX-Fusion CEO Kazuki Matsuo said.

However, the company faces significant challenges in using its space junk laser. After all, targeting rapid orbital debris from the Earth’s surface requires accurate tracking and aiming.
Ironically, the atmosphere may also deflect and weaken laser beams, reducing effectiveness. Moreover, fine-tuning its power is a delicate and dangerous task.

PARIS — The prehistoric megalodon (Otodus megalodon) is known as one of the most fearsome creatures the world has ever known, a horrifyingly giant shark immortalized in the monster movie “The Meg.”

But after reanalyzing the fossil evidence, scientists said on Monday they now think the shark was significantly thinner than previously thought.

While the 2018 B-movie starring Jason Statham depicted a megalodon preying on modern-day humans, the shark actually went extinct around 3.6 million years ago.

Previous research has suggested it could have been up to 20 meters (50 feet) long.

But size estimates have varied widely because they were based on the only remaining fossils of the shark, which are teeth and vertebrae.

And scientists had assumed that the megalodon had a similar stocky body shape to its modern descendant, the great white shark.

However, a better model may be the thinner mako shark, according to an international team of researchers behind a study in the journal Palaeontologia Electronica.

Slender, longer

“Our team reexamined the fossil record, and discovered the megalodon was more slender” than had been thought, University of California, Riverside biologist Phillip Sternes said in a statement.

But in bad news for Jason Statham in the next Meg movie, the shark actually may have been even longer than previously believed.

Michigan State University Associate Professor Bryan Smith says nanoparticles could be the key to beating heart disease and cancer. He also says many drugs and therapies target the common causes of these health conditions. That is why nanotubes can carry drugs and enter tumors to destroy tumors and plaque debris.

Medical research teaches us that we must target the causes of illnesses to cure them thoroughly. Eventually, we learned that some illnesses share the same causes, meaning we could make medicines that treat both diseases. As a result, we can create more powerful drugs against the two biggest killers in the world: heart disease and cancer.

This article will discuss how nanotubes could beat cancers and cardiovascular diseases simultaneously. Later, I will elaborate on other breakthroughs that could facilitate treatment.

How can nanotubes beat these diseases?

Professor Bryan Smith said nanotubes can enter specific immune cells, traverse the bloodstream, and enter tumors as a Trojan horse. Nanotubes are minuscule particles made of carbon over 10,000 times thinner than human hair.

Researchers can load anything into them, such as drugs and imaging contrast agents. Smith and his research team have been studying whether nanotube-loaded immune cells can deliver treatments to heart disease plaques.

They could load nanotubes with a therapy that causes immune cells to “eat” plaque debris and reduce size. Also, specifically delivering drugs to those immune cells reduces the risk of unintended effects.

Nanotubes can also improve cardiovascular disease diagnosis by highlighting plaques. These nanoparticles can also enter tumors by squeezing through openings in new blood vessels grown in inflammatory conditions.

The Philippines has been improving its cybersecurity measures as its digitalization efforts grow. Its Cybercrime Investigation Coordinating Center (CICC) has been spreading awareness regarding online scams so the public can defend themselves. The CICC has been deploying the latest tools, and the country has accepted more cybersecurity investments overseas.

The Congressional Policy and Budget Research Department (CPBRD) says digitalization could help the Philippine economy grow by ₱5 trillion or $97 billion by 2030. However, the CICC warns that online fraud in Metro Manila rose from 1,551 in 2022 to 4,446 in 2023, up to 186%. In response, the Philippines must bolster its cyber defenses.

This article will share some of the Pearl of the Orient’s latest cybersecurity measures. These include the CICC’s latest awareness drive, artificial intelligence tools, and the most recent company to bring cybersecurity investments.

The 3 most recent Philippine cybersecurity projects

1. CitizenWatch Philippines

On July 28, 2023, CICC Executive Director Alexander K. Ramos and CitizenWatch Philippines Lead Convenor Orlando Oxales led the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement.

Ramos said the MOA will help CICC reach vulnerable consumers and empower them with cybersecurity training campaigns. “We would like to show to them that partnership with the government is the solution to resolving cybercrimes.”

Retired Supreme Court Justice Andres Reyes, a CICC highly technical consultant, said that consumer fraud would be one of the four major areas to be included in the proposed National Cyber Security Plan.

“It will be one of the first four policies at the top of the agenda of the cyber security plan of the Philippines because it affects not only the consumer but the poor consumer,” he said.

Oxales said internet access has become an indispensable utility for daily transactions and interactions with the digital transformation of the government and private sectors.

"CitizenWatch Philippines is one with the Cybercrime Investigation Coordinating Center’s (CICC) campaign to safeguard our digital environment. It is with honor and great enthusiasm that CitizenWatch Philippines is partnering with the CICC to fight the rising cybercrime incidents victimizing the country’s consumers,” he said.

Attention, travelers! If you’re planning some trips for 2024, you might want to wait until February before booking your flights.

The Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) just downgraded the fuel surcharge level from Level 6 down to Level 5 for February, which means lower total airfares.

Fuel surcharges are basically the additional fees airlines charge on top of the base fare to cover the cost of airline fuel. With this newly announced lower fuel surcharge level, airlines are “allowed to collect fuel surcharges of P151 to P542 for domestic flights, while those flying outside the country will pay an additional P498.03 to P3,703.11 each,” Inquirer Business reports.

This is good news because flights to several noteworthy Philippine destinations will have lower fares.

Palawan, which currently ranks 4th in TripAdvisor’s top destinations for the year, will have a fuel surcharge of P316 for flights to Puerto Princesa.

Bohol, currently distinguished as one of the destinations on Agoda’s 2024 New Horizons list and home to Panglao, Booking.com’s trending global destination for 2024, can be accessed through Tagbilaran. The new, lower additional fuel charge for Tagbilaran is at P418.

The same amount will be charged for flights going to Siargao—another destination on Agoda’s New Horizons list.

Flights to foodie destinations like Cebu, Bacolod, and Iloilo will be charged P316 on top of the airline base fare. Meanwhile, flights to another Agoda New Horizon destination, the country’s very own Chocolate Capital, Davao, will have an additional P487 charge.

The ever-popular summer vacation spot Boracay, which was on Condé Nast’s list of best islands in Asia in 2023, will be even more accessible as its fuel surcharge will now only be P238 for flights to both Catalan and Kalibo.

MANILA —The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (Pagcor) is laying off over 660 workers from a casino near Manila Bay as it turns over operations to a private sector group—a prelude to future job disruptions as the state gaming regulator moves closer to implementing a decades-old plan to privatize all casinos by the end of 2025.

The Inquirer learned that Pagcor workers in the Casino Filipino New Coast in Malate were informed of the layoffs during a town hall meeting last December. The meeting was led by Pagcor chair and CEO Alejandro Tengco. A source told the Inquirer that employees started to receive their severance pay over the past few days.

“It’s a bit frustrating for us because we lost jobs while they’re saying that the industry is doing well,” an employee told the Inquirer. On Monday, Pagcor announced record high-revenues of over P285 billion in 2023, thanks to recovering land-based casinos and the boom in online gambling.

The employees were offered options to transfer to other roles within Pagcor but slots were either limited or the pay was much lower, the source said.

The layoffs were equivalent to roughly 6 percent of Pagcor’s workforce.

Special incentive packages

Tengco told the Inquirer on Wednesday that they complied with labor laws and that special incentive packages were provided to the 665 affected workers.

He also blamed the previous Pagcor board for failing to explain the impact to the workers during their talks with Marina Square Properties Inc. (MSPI). “When we learned of this I scheduled the town hall meetings to explain to them the sad news,” Tengco said.

The layoffs were related to the turnover of casino operations to private license holder MSPI, controlled by Hong Kong-listed International Entertainment Corp., which applied for a casino license during the Duterte administration.

LAS VEGAS — Technology causes us to lose sleep, but can it also give it back?

Companies aiming to help insomniacs, inveterate snorers and nap lovers showed off their latest gadgets at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

“We are the world’s first AI (artificial intelligence) powered… sleep tracker and personal sleep stimulator that enhances deep sleep and also the time to fall asleep,” said Kimi Doan, investment manager at Earable neuroscience.

She presented the “Brainband,” recently launched for almost $500.

Designed as a cushioned crown, the band’s gold-plated sensors analyze brain activity in real time, and its speakers play music, meditation mantras or white noise, depending on the needs detected.

After you fall asleep, AI will know the content that helped induce the slumber and play that again if you wake up in the middle of the night, she said.

“Basically you won’t be disturbed during your sleep.”

Vital to our well-being, sleep has deteriorated due to health problems or the stress of modern life.

In the United States, according to the Sleep Foundation, nearly a third of adults sleep less than seven hours a night, the minimum recommended to avoid aggravating the risks of cardiovascular disease and obesity.

January is National Cervical Cancer Awareness Month.
Cervical Cancer was once the leading cause of death in women in the US. The utilization of pap smears since the 40’s however, has resulted in a steep decline in the incidence and rate of deaths from cervical cancer¹

Regular screening and check-ups remain the best way to prevent and/or identify cervical cancer early.

With the introduction of cervical screenings in the 1940s cancer of the cervix has been eliminated as a leading cause of death in women.
