The 28 October, Ngā Manga Pūriri commemorated the signing of He Whakaputanga o te Rangatiratanga o Nu Tireni (1835).

Ngā Manga Pūriri was privileged to host Mariu Taua, who shared with our kaimahi a presentation on the Doctrine of Discovery and its connection to He Whakaputanga and how we can implement into our practice as a Kaupapa maori service and working with Whanau.

An opportunity to reflect, learn, and continue our own rangahau.

📢 NGĀ MANGA PŪRIRI | COMMUNITY CALL TO ACTION

E ngā mana, e ngā reo, e ngā karangatanga maha o te hapori, tēnā koutou katoa.

Ngā Manga Pūriri wishes to make our community aware that the Whangārei District Council have accepted a new On Licence Application for Monnie O'Shea's Irish Bar, to be located at 216 Bank Street, Whangārei, to operate as a tavern.

The application submitted by the Kensington Tavern Limited proposes to also include a TAB sports betting facility and gaming machines (pokies).

As a community, it is important that we carefully consider the potential cumulative harm and impacts that alcohol and gambling have on the wellbeing of our whānau and wider community.

We encourage residents, businesses, schools, churches, service providers, health practitioners, community groups, and all interested members of the public to consider the impact this will have on:

• Community wellbeing and safety
• Alcohol-related harm
• Gambling-related harm
• Tamariki and rangatahi
• Vulnerable individuals and whānau
• Financial hardship and addiction issues
• Noise, disorder and public nuisance
• Demand on local health, social and emergency services
• The increasing concentration of alcohol and gambling venues within our community

MORE IMPORTANTLY THE IMPACT ON MOKOPUNA WHO WALK IN AND AROUND THAT AREA TO GET TO AND FROM SCHOOL.

To make the process easier, Ngā Manga Pūriri has prepared two objection templates that individuals and organisations can use as a starting point for their own submissions. Click onto our website https://www.nmp.org.nz/ on the home page which will take you to the submission templates.

- BELONGING MATTERS -

Our team designed their artistic interpretation of the theme for Mental Health Awareness Week 2026.

As a kaupapa Māori provider of mental health and addictions in Te Tai Tokerau. We know how important it is to feel connected and belong.

Tuesday some of our team presented at the Whangārei Community Networkers Hui alongside Whangārei R**e Crises. That afternoon we hosted a wāhine kōrero wānanga of mental health from a Māori and Pasifika lens.

Wednesday we attended and participated in the flash mob dance at Pūtahi Park. A joing event hosted by Arataki Ministries and Te Whatu Ora.

Friday we ended the week at Ngāwha with Whaea Teina Piripi, as our organisation's cultural supervisor. Grounding back to Papatuanuku amongst Te Taiao and our healing waters.

Amorangi - Cultural and Tikanga Lead, Saadiq Tua was fortunate to represent Ngā Manga Pūriri at the opening of the new Whare Manaaki at the Tākou Bay Kauri Sanctuary.

As a mokopuna of Tākou Bay, this was a significant occasion to be part of. Tākou is also the final resting place of the great waka Mataatua.

The new Whare Manaaki will provide opportunities to host kaupapa at Whetū Mārama Marae, with the community also looking forward to the opening of Mataatua ki Tākou marae later this year.

Ngā Manga Pūriri looks forward to strengthening our relationships with Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Rēhia.

He mihi mutunga kore ki a koe, Ruahine, Rawinia Marino.

Two weeks ago, we officially farewelled our dear Ruahine, Rawinia Marino, as she stepped into a well-deserved retirement.

Over the past two and a half years at Ngā Manga Pūriri, Rawinia gave so much heart to our kaupapa and whānau. From stepping in as a Teina Kai Manaaki, to supporting Whānau Resilience, working as a Problem Gambling Practitioner, and offering gentle healing through Havening Techniques, her journey has been one of pure service and aroha.

Her calming presence, wisdom, and ability to hold space for whānau will be dearly missed around the tari.

E te mareikura, thank you for the tautoko, the laughter, and the manaakitanga you shared so generously.

We wish you restful, joyful days ahead surrounded by your whānau.

Nga mihi nui mō tō whakatā!

Amorangi - Cultural and Tikanga Lead Saadiq Tua was honoured to represent Ngā Manga Pūriri at the reopening of Old Russell Road today.

Born and bred in Whangaruru, Amorangi is of Te Uri o Hikihiki and Ngātiwai whakapapa, making this a particularly meaningful occasion for him and and bringing our services to the Ngatiwai Iwi.

The road had been closed since January following a significant slip, heavily impacting the Whangaruru community and surrounding areas.

The reopening marks an important step forward for local whānau and communities who have faced months of disruption.

Ngā Manga Pūriri looks forward to strengthening our relationships and working more closely with Ngātiwai, exploring how we can better support and service Te Akau Roa 🦅 🌊.
