New Zealand’s legal job market is hot – but the real story is the export of our best younger talent to London.
LawFuel’s latest reporting shows that many large and boutique NZ firms are chasing the same cohort that elite US and Magic Circle firms in London are targeting and the pay gap is brutal.
While strong mid‑level lawyers here might see total packages in the NZD 120k–130k range, top US firms in London are paying NQs around £170k–£180k and 3PQE associates on base salaries reported as high as £240k (before bonuses).
Local firms simply cannot compete at that level.
The result is a widening 3–4 PQE “hole” in New Zealand teams especially in disputes, banking and finance, corporate and employment, as lawyers jump for big‑ticket international work and eye‑watering compensation.
For many, London is becoming a deliberate career stage: do two to five years, bank the experience (and the cash), then return to NZ as a premium candidate for senior private practice or in‑house roles.
For NZ firms if you cannot match the money, you have to win on something else: flexibility, culture, genuine progression, secondments and a clear re‑entry path for returning London alumni.
Those who move fastest on that front will be the ones who still have a mid‑level bench in five years’ time.
Are more résumés heading to London, or smarter retention strategies emerging?

What's happening with Meredith Connell?

The firm’s earlier “strategic review” is starting to look less like a one‑off tidy‑up and more like a slow‑burn identity crisis for New Zealand’s best‑known Crown prosecutor.

When a firm that has dined out for years on its Crown warrant suddenly talks “focus”, trims its commercial ambitions and waves goodbye to senior talent, the market tends to ask awkward questions – like whether this is strategy, or just spin with better stationery.

Our latest LawFuel piece looks at the review, the exits and what it all really signals for MC’s future as either the Crown jewel of the market or a highly polished holding pattern.

Have a read and decide which it is.

Three more senior litigators have walked from MC to Richmond Chambers. The pattern is now too consistent to be coincidence – and it sharpens a question the firm

The "Big Law Silence" is officially over.

MinterEllison has just confirmed what many in the industry have been whispering about: AI is no longer a "future threat"—it’s actively reshaping the legal workforce today. By slashing their graduate intake by nearly 30% for the upcoming cycle, Minters is highlighting a tectonic shift in how firms view entry-level labor.

When a machine can handle 12,000 documents in the time it takes a junior to grab a coffee, the old "pyramid model" starts to look very fragile. For law grads, the message is clear: routine work is being automated, and the value of a human lawyer is moving higher up the chain faster than ever before.

Is this a temporary dip or the beginning of a permanent structural change in Australian Big Law?

MinterEllison becomes the first major Australian law firm to admit AI is reducing graduate hiring. Read how automation is reshaping Big Law recruitment in 2026.
