Good candidates do not always wait around.

During busy recruitment periods, a slow hiring process can mean losing people to another employer before you have even finished your shortlist.

Before summer hiring ramps up, check your recruitment process.

Can you:
-Review applications within a couple of days
-Contact strong candidates quickly
-Keep interviews simple
-Make responsibilities clear between managers
-Complete reference checks promptly
-Communicate next steps clearly
-Make an offer without unnecessary delays

Candidates notice when a recruitment process is organised.

They also notice when it is not.

Speed should not mean cutting corners.

It means removing unnecessary delays so good candidates do not disappear while you are still deciding what to do.

You've Got the Interview. Now What?

Ever walked out of a job interview thinking, "Why on earth did I say that?" Or remembered the perfect answer to a question about three hours too late?
You're not alone! Even the most capable, experienced people can come unstuck in an interview. And unfortunately, being good at your job and being good at interviews aren't necessarily the same thing.
The good news? Interview skills can be learned.
That's why Sarah Millwater and I are teaming up with Central Otago REAP to deliver Interview Ready? – Demystifying the Interview Process, a practical workshop in Wānaka on Thursday 29 October.
We'll be sharing what we've learned from years on the other side of the interview table, including what employers are actually looking for, how to tackle those awkward questions, and how to make sure your skills and experience don't get lost in the nerves.
Why does it matter?

The job market is presenting some real challenges, particularly for younger people. Recent figures highlighted by HRD New Zealand show unemployment at 25.3% for 15–19-year-olds and 12% for 20–24-year-olds.
Closer to home, we're fortunate to have much lower unemployment, with the latest available figures showing 1.5% in Queenstown Lakes (June 2026) and 1.3% in Central Otago (2025), compared with 5.4% nationally (June 2026).
But here's the thing. Just because unemployment is low doesn't mean you'll automatically land the job you want. Employers still have choices, and a good interview can make all the difference.
Over the years, I've interviewed plenty of people who would have been excellent employees but simply didn't do themselves justice in the interview. Equally, I've seen candidates with less experience really shine because they came prepared.
And that's exactly why we're running this workshop.
We'd love you to join us!
Whether you're entering the workforce, changing careers, getting back into employment or simply haven't had an interview in years, come along.
We'll take some of the mystery out of the process, share practical tips and help you approach your next interview with a bit more confidence.

Interview Ready? – Demystifying the Interview Process
Thursday 29 October 2026 | 6.30–8.00pm
Wānaka Community Hub Auditorium
Cost: $25 per person
Register through Central Otago REAP
Don't wait until you've got an interview lined up to work out how to handle one.
Come and find out what happens on the other side of the table. We'd love to see you there!

Got a mate who is always talking about their staff problems?

Every coffee:

“Honestly, you would not believe what happened at work…”

Every BBQ:

“I don’t know what I’m supposed to do with this employee…”

Every phone call:

“Can I run something past you?”

Maybe it is time to stop being their unofficial HR department. 😄

Send them our way.

Louise offers a Monthly HR Advisory Catch-Up — one hour each month for business owners and managers to talk through staff issues, sense-check decisions, identify risks and work out the right next step.

They can bring the questions.

Louise can help sort through them.

And you can go back to talking about something else.

Automation can be powerful when it is used in the right place.

It can help with reminders, templates, reporting, scheduling, document flow, customer follow-up and repeated admin tasks.

But not everything should be automated.

People decisions, sensitive conversations, customer judgement and employment matters still need human thinking.

A useful automation question is:

Can this task be automated without removing the judgement that matters?

Good automation should:
-Reduce repetitive work
-Improve consistency
-Save time
-Support better decisions
-Make work easier for the team
-Keep human judgement where it is needed

The goal is not to take people out of the process.

The goal is to make the process work better for people.

Better process. Better experience.

In a competitive summer labour market, a job ad cannot just be a list of duties.

Candidates also want to know:
-What the hours are
-What the pay range is
-Whether there is flexibility
-What the team is like
-Whether accommodation is available
-What training is provided
-Whether there is room to grow
-What makes the role worth choosing

For hospitality and tourism businesses, lifestyle can be part of the offer too.

Can staff ski, hike, bike, travel, enjoy long weekends, work school hours or fit the job around other commitments?

If you want better applicants, give people a reason to picture themselves in the role.

A strong job ad should answer:
Why would someone want this job?

Manager development does not always need to happen in a formal training room.

Sometimes the best development happens when managers get practical support with the real situations they are dealing with.

Louise’s Monthly HR Advisory Catch-Up can help managers build confidence around:

-Difficult conversations
-Performance concerns
-Documentation
-Fair process
-Staff expectations
-Employment risk
-Knowing when to ask for advice
-Making the right decision at the right time

It is part HR advisory, part coaching, and part practical people-management support.

A regular monthly check-in can help managers grow their capability while also reducing risk for the business.

Before adding AI into your workplace, it helps to ask:
-Where is the team losing time?
-What tasks are repeated often?
-Where is double-handling happening?
-What information is hard to find?
-What slows down customer response times?
-What manual admin could be simplified?
-Where would better consistency help?

The best starting point is not “what AI tool should we use?”

It is “what problem are we trying to solve?”

EASI NZ can help businesses look at AI, automation and workflow improvement through a practical business lens.

Better process. Better experience. Book your consult today 021 665 013 | [email protected] | easinz.co.nz
