Congratulations to our Partner, Naoimh McAllister, who has been included on a list of Elite Women in Law for 2026. 🀩

The list was generated by Australasian Lawyer and NZ Lawyer and recognises outstanding female leaders who are making a significant impact across the legal profession in Australia and New Zealand.

While Naoimh is routinely humble about it all, we reckon it's worth celebrating – well done, Naoimh! πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

Smart glasses are appearing in New Zealand workplaces, and they’re raising some very real privacy questions.

The Privacy Commissioner has now issued guidance on the use of smart glasses, and it’s something employers should take note of.

While they can offer genuine benefits for training, health and safety, technical support, accessibility, and operational efficiency, these tools also create significant privacy risks if not managed carefully.

The key question is not whether the technology is useful. It's whether any collection of personal information is necessary, transparent, and properly controlled.

In our latest article, Senior Associate Anna Ford explores:
βœ… When smart glasses can be used legitimately at work
βœ… The Privacy Commissioner's expectations
βœ… Risks associated with employee-owned devices
βœ… Practical steps employers should take to protect workplace privacy

We’re thrilled to share that Copeland McAllister now has two independent mediators on our team.

Senior Associate Hannah Goddard-Coles has recently become an accredited mediator through the Resolution Institute, joining Partner Naoimh McAllister in offering independent workplace mediation services.

Why is this important? Because mediation is often one of the fastest, most cost-effective ways to resolve workplace disputes before they escalate.

Whether you're dealing with a personal grievance, workplace relationship issues, performance concerns, or an employment agreement dispute, mediation helps parties find practical solutions and move forward.

We've put together an article exploring:
βœ… When mediation may be appropriate
βœ… The benefits for employers
βœ… How the process works
βœ… Why early resolution can save time, money, and stress

If you're looking for an independent mediator, or a specialist employment lawyer to represent you in mediation, we'd be happy to help. We offer both in-person and online mediation services.

A fantastic turnout at this week's BDO Biz Bites session, where our Managing Partner Janet Copeland spoke about the changes under the Employment Leave Act and what employers need to know.

There is a lot for employers to get their heads around. While there is a two-year transition period, we all know how quickly time passes, so now is a good time to start understanding the changes and planning ahead.

Thanks to the Southland Business Chamber for hosting another great event, and to everyone who came along and joined the discussion.

If you'd like to chat about how these changes could affect your workplace, or would like a handy one-page summary of the key changes, please get in touch.

πŸ“’ The Holidays Act is being replaced - here's what employers need to know.

The Employment Leave Bill passed its third and final reading in Parliament yesterday and now awaits Royal assent. Once it comes into force, it will repeal the Holidays Act 2003 and introduce a new hours-based leave system for New Zealand employers.

Key changes on the way:

πŸ‘‰ Annual leave and sick leave accrue from day one, based on standard hours worked (no more waiting 6–12 months for entitlements)

πŸ‘‰ Leave is taken and recorded in hours, not weeks or days

πŸ‘‰ Casual and "additional" hours attract a 12.5% Leave Compensation Payment instead of accruing leave

πŸ‘‰ Employers get a 24-month implementation period, plus a further year to update employment agreements

This is the biggest overhaul of NZ leave legislation in over two decades, and it's designed to fix the compliance problems that have cost employers.

24 months sounds like a long runway, but payroll system changes, policy updates and employment agreement reviews take time.

Want to understand how the changes will affect your organisation? Get in touch - we're here to help you get ahead of the transition.

Did you know an employee doesn't have to use the words "personal grievance" for a complaint to be treated as one?

The courts have confirmed it's the substance of the communication that matters, not the label attached to it.

If an employee provides enough information for an employer to understand the concerns being raised, it may be enough to constitute a personal grievance, even if those specific words are never used.

For employers, it's a useful reminder to look beyond the terminology and focus on what's actually being communicated.
