Director’s Note: A Day in the Director’s Chair
People sometimes ask what a director actually does all day. Honestly? A bit of everything. Here’s a real one:
6:30am: Coffee in one hand, phone in the other. Messages are already coming in before the day officially starts.
7:00am: Mum mode. Lunchboxes, uniforms, “where’s your other shoe?” Getting the kids sorted for school while answering the odd message in between. Real life doesn’t pause for work, and work doesn’t pause for real life.
8:30am: School drop-off done. Quick call in the car to check the daily running’s are on track.
9:00am: Team check-in. My job here is simple: clear the path so my team can do their best work.
10:00am: Supplier calls. Keeping everyone in the loop means fewer surprises later. Good communication is the most underrated part of this job.
11:30am: Yes, this is real: one phone on each ear. A client on one line, a supplier on the other. Not glamorous, but it gets things sorted.
1:00pm: Lunch... eventually. Usually at my desk, usually cold.
2:00pm: A client with a challenge calls. This is the part I take most seriously. If a client needs me, I’m reachable. Full stop.
3:30pm: Weekly running’s review. Making sure the bigger picture is moving, not just today’s to-do list.
5:00pm: Thinking time. New incentives for our clients, new ways to keep the team motivated. The ideas rarely arrive at my desk; they usually show up on the couch or in the shower.
7:00pm: “Just one more call.”
9:00pm: Phone finally down. (Mostly.)
The truth is, being a director isn’t about sitting at the top. It’s about being available, keeping everyone connected, and making sure the people around you have what they need to succeed, at work and at home.
