It’s easy to overlook the small moments at work, there are hundreds that may feel insignificant and the meaning behind those moments may be a little harder to see. But often the things you learn along the way end up being some of the most valuable.

Every conversation, project or difficult experience gives you the chance to learn. You might take something on that you’ve never done before, help with something outside of your usual responsibilities, or solve a problem that feels a bit out of your comfort zone. At the time it may feel like just another thing to tick off your to-do list but you’re often picking up new skills without even realising it.

You may be learning how to communicate better with different people, improving your time management skills, or even building a bit more confidence in your own abilities. These skills may not have been what you set out to learn and you may not even realise it at the time, but they can stay with you long after the opportunity has passed.

Some of your biggest learning opportunities will come at times you least expect them. So, say yes to something new, ask questions, offer your colleagues a helping hand, and step outside of your comfort zone.

Nobody likes making mistakes. Whether it's accidentally double booking yourself or forgetting an important detail, it can be easy to dwell on things that go wrong.

But the reality is that mistakes are a normal part of life and learning. Every new job, new challenge, and new responsibility comes with a learning curve – both in your professional and personal life.

Your manager won’t expect you to know everything from day one – what they will want to see is someone who wants to learn, take accountability and keep improving.

Often what matters most isn’t the mistake itself, but how you respond to it. Own your mistake, ask questions, and take the steps you can to avoid making the same one again. This shows resilience and confidence, which are two soft skills that can take you a long way.

It’s also good to remember that some of your biggest moments of growth may come from things that don’t go to plan. Mistakes can teach you new skills and help keep you open minded to new things.

No one gets everything right all of the time, but the people who go the furthest are the ones who can see mistakes as opportunities rather than failures.

The next time something doesn’t go to plan, try to not get caught up in it. Learn from it, move forward and trust that every challenge is a sign of growth.
