We skip the surface level conversations.

➡️ Can they actually read drawings, coordinate trades and solve problems on the ground?

➡️ Can they keep a crew moving when if a programme starts slipping?

➡️ Can they spot when something on paper simply won’t work on site before it becomes a roadblock?

We ask better questions, validate experience accurately and give our clients a clearer picture of what working with a candidate will look like day to dat.

This level of detail matters, especially when you’re hiring for the capability gaps your business needs.

Very exciting times for our Trades division as we welcome our newest team member Tama, to Franklin Smith!

Tama joins us to lead our Trades division across New Zealand’s construction and infrastructure sectors, bringing a diverse background spanning recruitment, technology, media, financial services and business development.

He’s spent his career building businesses, developing people and creating partnerships that last. Our trades clients need exactly that: someone who understands their workforce challenges and is in it for the long haul.

We’re stoked to have you with us Tama, and excited for what’s ahead!

What is one of the simplest ways to make filling your next role much harder than it needs to be?

➡️ Writing a job description for someone who doesn’t exist.

It’s easy to keep adding requirements until you’ve created a very specific picture of who you want, but the better question is:

➡️ What problem do we need this role to solve, and what capability does a person need to solve it?

So instead of standing still waiting for the perfect candidate, you can focus on finding the capability your business needs to solve problems, create momentum and drive growth.

It changes the questions we ask, the conversations we have and ultimately the people we put forward.

Many of our team have worked on the tools themselves for years, so we understand the reality behind the industries we work across.

We understand the technical capability, experience and personalities needed to thrive on site. For us, that means more informed conversations with both businesses and candidates, the ability to challenge assumptions when needed, and get closer to pinpointing exactly what you need.

Anyone can read a CV.

But it takes someone who understands the work to translate what’s on paper into how someone will actually perform on the tools.

✨ Staff Spotlight ✨

Meet Amy, our incredible Human Resources Manager.

➡️ We asked Amy, what’s your favourite part of working in HR?

"Probably the people side of it. I like working with different people across the business, building relationships, and helping create a workplace where people genuinely enjoy coming to work. I also really enjoy the variety. No two days are the same, and there’s always an element of problem-solving and working out the best way forward."

➡️ What would your friends say is your most obvious personality trait?

"That I’m terrible at sitting still. I always have to be doing something, whether it’s a house project, learning a new skill or just finding something new to give a go. However, I’m very much a jack of all trades, master of none. I love learning new things, but I’m not always patient enough to stick around until I’ve mastered them, if my house reno’s are anything to go by!"

Even if she hasn’t mastered every trade, she’s certainly definitely mastered the people part. The culture at Franklin Smith is something we’re all incredibly proud to be part of, and Amy has played a huge role in creating a place we genuinely love coming to every day!

The most experienced applicant might be the worst choice for your site. Here's why:

➡️ The same person can thrive in one environment but struggle in another.

➡️ A list of qualifications tell you nothing about how someone works under your leadership, within your team or at your pace.

➡️ A person who has succeeded in a highly structured business could struggle if your site requires them to make decisions on the fly.

Usually, the question isn’t whether they’ve done the job before.

It’s whether they’ve done it in the conditions your site demands, because experience only matters if it translates to your site.

This month, we’re recognising Edmond Escobar as our Tradie of the Month!

Edmond has been working in Queenstown for the past six months as a Multi Skilled Operator, and in that time he’s made a real impact on the team around him.

His work ethic, skill set and team first attitude haven’t gone unnoticed. In fact, when our team recently caught up with his crew, we found out they’d trusted him with a work ute and fuel card - a great reflection of the his efforts and vaue!

For us, this is what great placements are about. Putting the right people into the right teams and seeing them thrive.

Nice work Edmond!

Retention in a job isn’t just about the role or the pay, it’s also about how people are supported once they’re through the door.

We recently hosted a Health & Wellness event for our guys in Tāmaki Makaurau, alongside the awesome team at Coversure.

34 of our workers took the opportunity to complete a health check on the day, covering things like blood pressure, blood sugar and general health and wellbeing.

For us, our role goes far beyond getting someone into a job. It’s about building strong, capable, long term workforces, and that means looking after people along the way.

We believe that when people feel supported, the businesses they work with benefit too.

The thing most likely to derail your next project isn't the weather or the timeline.

It's whether your people feel supported enough to stay on it.

Every project is built by people, and how those people are looked after (day to day, on site and off it) shows up directly in how a project runs. Performance, cohesion and whether your team is still intact when the next phase starts.

In reality, all businesses know this, but few have the capacity to deliver it properly alongside everything else they're managing.

That's a key part we take off your plate, so your people are looked after, and your project doesn't pay the price when they're not.

What does your business do to support workers beyond the pay packet?

The specialist trades shortage rarely hits businesses all at once.

It starts with one role sitting open longer than expected. The team absorbs it. Timelines get quietly adjusted, and before long, decisions that should have been made six months ago are being made under pressure.

Swipe to see why the specialist shortage isn't going to solve itself, and why the domestic market alone may not be the answer.
