Celebrating today can be a challenge in some countries. In the Netherlands, however, itโs nothing unusual. You could even say that ๐๐ข๐ค๐ ๐ญ๐จ ๐๐จ๐ซ๐ค ๐๐๐ฒ is celebrated here every day.
Cyclists in the Netherlands often have more priority than drivers or pedestrians, and the road infrastructure is surprisingly well organized in this regard.
If youโve read the facts from our carousel, you already know quite a lot about cycling in the Netherlands. Here are a few more less obvious ones.
๐๐๐ ๐ฌ๐ข๐จ ๐๐ก๐ข๐ช:
๐ฒ Today, over 49% of new bicycles sold in the Netherlands are e-bikes, while fat bikes already make up around 13% of the market. This is a major shift that affects not only comfort but also road safety. Fat bikes are increasingly discussed as a safety issue, especially among young people. They can reach high speeds and are sometimes modified to go faster than regulations allow.
๐ฒ In some parts of the Netherlands, cycling paths are heated in winter to prevent freezing. It sounds like an ideal solution, but it also has a downside. The warm surface attracts small animals such as frogs. For cyclists, this can mean not only the risk of hitting an animal, but also sudden manoeuvres that may lead to accidents.
๐ฒ Every year, thousands of bicycles are pulled out of the canals in Amsterdam. This is done regularly using special boats equipped with cranes and metal grabbers that lift bikes from the bottom.
What about you? Do you cycle to work? ๐ Or maybe you have a funny story related to cycling?
