When Christo Schoonbee and his wife heard the word “retrenchments” floating around at work, they had a big decision to make.

Today, Christo works as a High Voltage Technical Specialist at Royal SMIT Transformers in the Netherlands.

Was it instant? Nope.
Was it always easy? Also nope.
Was it worth it? According to Christo, absolutely.

🇳🇱 Pinksteren in the Netherlands: Why Monday Matters Too

On 24 and 25 May, the Netherlands observes Pinksteren, known in English as Pentecost or Whitsun.

Christians will know Pentecost as the day that commemorates the coming of the Holy Spirit.

In the Netherlands, it is a two-day holiday period:

📅 Eerste Pinksterdag, Whit Sunday
📅 Tweede Pinksterdag, Whit Monday

Whit Monday is an official public holiday in the Netherlands, which means many people have the Monday off.

Expect:
🌷 day trips
🚲 cycling and outdoor plans
🛍️ some shops open with adjusted hours
🚆 busier trains and roads around popular areas

🇳🇱 Hemelvaartsdag: A Public Holiday With a Very Dutch Long-Weekend Twist

On 14 May, the Netherlands observes Hemelvaartsdag, or Ascension Day.

Christians will know Ascension Day as the day that commemorates Jesus Christ’s ascension into heaven.

In the Netherlands, it is also an official public holiday and many people have the day off work.

💡 What South Africans should know:
Because it falls on a Thursday, many people take the Friday off too. This is called a brugdag, literally a “bridge day”, creating a four-day weekend.

You may notice:

🚲 people going for early morning walks or bike rides
🌿 families heading outdoors
🏕️ campsites getting busy
🏙️ quieter offices and slower replies

Some towns and communities may organise local activities, markets or outdoor events, but for many people it’s simply a relaxed day off.

🇳🇱 From Silence to Celebration: What 5 May Means in the Netherlands

The day after remembrance comes celebration.

On 5 May, the Netherlands celebrates Bevrijdingsdag, or Liberation Day.

This day marks the liberation of the Netherlands from N**i German occupation at the end of World War II. Across the country, you’ll find Liberation Festivals, concerts, ceremonies and community events focused on freedom, democracy and peace.

💡 What South Africans should know:
Bevrijdingsdag is celebrated every year, but it does not automatically mean everyone gets the day off work every year.

Whether you are actually off depends on your employer, contract or CAO. In many workplaces, Liberation Day is only a paid day off once every five years.

So yes, it’s an important national day.

But no, don’t assume you can sleep in unless your employer confirms it. 😉
