📐 If you can read a technical drawing and turn it into real work on site, that skill could qualify you for more jobs than you realise.

Across many of the vacancies we recruit for, technical drawings are where the job starts. They tell you the measurements, positions, materials and specifications you need to take a project from a plan to a finished installation.

And this skill comes up again and again.

A window fitter may need to work from drawings to position and install frames accurately.

A cladding mechanic uses them to understand façade layouts, supporting structures, panel dimensions and fixing positions.

A drywall and metal stud installer needs to translate drawings into correctly positioned walls, partitions, ceilings and metal framing.

A carpenter may use drawings to measure, cut, assemble and install structural or prefabricated elements.

A welder or metalworker can be expected to understand technical drawings, dimensions and welding specifications before fabrication begins.

The materials change. The tools change. The finished product changes. But the ability to look at a drawing, understand what needs to be built and work accurately from it transfers across a lot of construction roles.

🔨 What does a Drywall & Metal Stud Installer actually do?

It’s a role that covers much more than fixing plasterboard to a wall.

A large part of the job starts before the drywall goes up. Metal stud installers build the internal framework that creates walls, partitions and ceilings inside a building. That means measuring the space, reading technical drawings and installing metal tracks and studs accurately so the structure is straight, secure and ready for boarding.

Once the framework is in place, drywall or plasterboard is measured, cut and fixed to the structure. Depending on the project, the work can also involve suspended ceilings, openings for doors and services, insulation and more complex interior layouts.

Accuracy is a big part of the job. A small mistake in the framework can affect everything that comes afterwards, so installers need to be comfortable measuring, cutting, levelling and working independently from technical drawings.

You may also know this type of work as drylining, plasterboard installation, metal framing, metal stud work or partition installation.

That’s important because we know job titles are different across countries and companies. You might have exactly the experience we need without ever having called yourself a “Drywall & Metal Stud Installer.”

🔨 A cladding mechanic does a lot more than simply “put panels on a building.”

The job is about building and finishing the external layer of a structure. Cladding mechanics install façade systems that protect buildings from the elements, provide insulation and give the exterior its finished appearance.

Depending on the project, you could be working with composite cladding panels, sandwich panels and different types of façade materials. The work can also involve installing the supporting or substructure that those panels are fixed to.

A typical day can include reading technical drawings, measuring and marking out the façade, cutting materials to size, installing supporting profiles or frames, positioning panels and making sure everything is correctly aligned, fixed and sealed.

Accuracy matters. Panels need to line up properly, joints need to be consistent and the finished façade needs to be secure and weatherproof.

You may already have relevant experience without having worked under the exact title “cladding mechanic.” Experience with façade installation, sandwich panels, metal construction, roofing systems, exterior building systems or similar installation work could give you skills that transfer into the role.

🇳🇱 NEW JOB IN THE NETHERLANDS: DRYWALL & METAL STUD INSTALLER

We’re looking for experienced Drywall & Metal Stud Installers for long-term work in Schijndel, the Netherlands, starting from 31 August.

You’ll be working on metal stud structures, drywall boards, partition walls and suspended ceilings. You’ll need to be comfortable reading technical drawings and completing work accurately and independently to the required quality standards.

We’re looking for experienced specialists who can achieve around 25–30 boards / ±75m² installed per day.

The job starts at approximately 37.5–40 hours per week, with the possibility of more hours as you settle into the role and demonstrate that you can work independently.

No work at heights is required, and you don’t need to already have a Dutch VCA certificate — the course will be arranged for you.
