Going to work in the Netherlands for the first time and worried about "niet verstaan" (not understanding anything)?
Take it easy!
The Dutch love it when expats try to speak even a few words of their language.
Even if you sound like you’re choking on your tea – they’ll appreciate the effort!😉
Here are 5 words that will save you on your first day:
1️⃣ Hoi! (hoy) – the simplest greeting. You’ll hear it everywhere: at the warehouse entrance, in the canteen, and from your neighbor on a bike.
2️⃣ Lekker! (lek-er) – the "chameleon" word. It means "delicious" (when eating lunch), "cool/nice" (when work is going well), and even "pretty." The ultimate universal compliment!
3️⃣ Asjeblieft (as-ye-bleeft) – "Please / Here you go." Use it when handing something over or asking for tools. A magic word that opens all doors (and coordinators' hearts).
4️⃣ Dankjewel (dank-ye-wel) – "Thank you." Respect level +100.
5️⃣ Tot morgen! (tot mor-hen) – "See you tomorrow!" Perfect for the end of your shift. Toss this to your boss with a smile, and they’ll think you’re practically a local!
Bonus for the brave: Want to impress the crew in the canteen? Say: "Lekker bakkie koffie!" (delicious cup of coffee). We guarantee a smile on your colleagues' faces!😎
