I saw this email screenshot today on X and it really struck me.

A U.S. company wrote to someone saying, “This role is generally open to U.S.-based candidates only, but we found your YouTube videos interesting and we’ll be able to make an exception. Do you have a GitHub containing your n8n workflows?”

That line - “we’ll be able to make an exception” — says everything.

Because with the anti-immigration sentiment in the U.S., you’d think no company would even consider hiring someone from outside the country. But here’s proof that value trumps barriers.

Unfortunately, a lot of people see “Japa” as an escape, an escape from poverty, from Tinubu’s bad government, and from the tough realities of living in Nigeria. The visa officer reviewing your case, the foreign company considering your application, or the graduate admissions committee assessing your profile is not running a charity. They are looking for value — exceptional value that they cannot easily find in the United States. They are not trying to help anyone escape hardship; they are looking for people who can contribute, solve problems, and bring something unique to the table.

When you bring real value to the table, people notice. They make exceptions.

The people getting visas and job offers abroad are the ones already doing meaningful work here. They have built something. They have a track record. They have proof of value.

Bottomline, if you want to japa like a king, start building value from where you are today.
