Tape Reading in Fashion

A measuring tape is an essential tool in fashion design and garment construction. It is used to take accurate body measurements and measure fabric lengths. Proper understanding of tape reading helps to achieve well-fitted garments and reduces errors during cutting and sewing.

A standard tailoring measuring tape is usually:
60 inches (150 cm) long.
Marked in inches on one side and centimetres (cm) on the other side.

Flexible, making it suitable for measuring curved body parts.

Reading Measurements in Inches
The inch side of a tape is divided into smaller units:
1 inch (1") = one complete division.
½ inch (half inch) = divided into 2 equal parts.
¼ inch (quarter inch) = divided into 4 equal parts.
⅛ inch (eighth inch) = divided into 8 equal parts.
Eg:
5⅛" = Five and one eighth inches.

Reading Measurements in Centimetres
On the metric side:
10 millimetres (mm) = 1 centimetre (cm).
The small lines between centimetres represent millimetres.
Examples:
2.5 cm = Two and a half centimetres.
10 cm = 100 mm.
