Organisations are calling back remote workers to the office. They are either asking that employees resume fully on site or have reduced the number of days employees are allowed to work remotely.

To employees, its probably unfair and insensitive especially if their jobs can be done remotely. I have been working remotely for over a year now and I absolutely enjoy it but before then I had worked onsite and hybrid for many years before a remote job opportunity came.

The truth is, organisations are having to deal with productivity and commitment issues. I envisage that some people may not be pleased with this perspective but let me try and explain. Remote work has its benefits and disadvantages to both employees and organisation.

As an employee, a lot is expected of you if you want to be successful in your remote role………

It’s interesting to see how small the world has become because of technology. In 2020 and post-COVID, many organizations and businesses that could operate remotely were forced to adjust to the new realities. While some organizations have returned to the former arrangement of onsite work, and some hybrid; there are organizations still allowing employees work remotely. Many individuals have also taken advantage of the new normal to getting exciting remote opportunities from any where in the world.

I work largely remotely and I can say that it’s fun, fulfilling and stress-free. The stress of commuting is out of the way, I get to spend more quality time with my family etc. Of cos, it’s not without its challenges such as getting the opportunity in the first place, work-life balance, collaboration, visibility etc.

I’d love you to join me and other amazing panelists at this event organized by Nexford University
It’s a physical event happening this Friday, please fill the form below to register your attendance.

See you there.

In the early days of my HR career, it was normal for us to invite different candidates and give them the same timeslot for a physical interview and they would be attended to based on a first come first served basis especially if it was for the same role and the candidates would have to wait for their turn to be interviewed.

A few years on, we started giving candidates their own time with consideration of an additional 10-15 minutes should there be a need to keep a previous candidate later than expected.

Delays happen, all you owe a candidate is a genuine reason for the delay and if possible move the meeting to a better time that works for both parties. Recruiting has evolved, there is a lot of emphasis on candidate experience. In a world where the talents now have a choice, you cannot afford to treat a candidate poorly.

If you want to test a candidate’s patience (whatever that is), please find a more appropriate way to do it. There are different assessments, behavioral questions etc. Don’t underestimate the value of anyone’s time.

If this truly happened, I feel for the last two who got the job. They are in for it.

What would you do if this happened to you?

Happy new year everyone. Wishing you beauty all year round. #2024
