12 weeks of talking about hiring in Nigeria. What we learned:

→ Almost nobody has contracts
→ Offer letters cause more problems than interviews
→ "No time" usually means "no process"
→ Most people want reassurance more than software

Expecting a January resignation? Prepare now, not when the letter lands.

→ Write the JD for every role you'd need to replace — while they're still there
→ Keep a warm list of strong runners-up
→ Know your salary range before you're under pressure

That first one is what we're building for. Waitlist in bio.

A year-end review that takes 30 minutes and a notebook. 📝
1 What are you most proud of?
2 What was hardest?
3 What do you want to be doing differently next year?
4 What do you need from me?
Then write half a page. Reading it back in three months is the powerful part. Save this.

Bonuses in December. Resignations in January.

It's not betrayal — they decided in July and waited for the money they'd earned.
The signals, visible right now:
→ They stopped raising problems
→ They've taken all their leave
→ No talk about next year
→ Doing the job and nothing more

Have the conversation this month, not in January.

Your team is already thinking about December pay.

A 13th month isn't a legal requirement in Nigeria — it's customary, and it becomes an obligation through contracts or consistent practice.

So the risk isn't legal. It's silence.
→ Decide in November, not late December
→ Say something even if it's no
→ Be clear if it's discretionary
→ If cash is tight, think beyond money

What team situation are you avoiding?

The one who's always late.
The good performer nobody can work with.
The conversation you've rehearsed six times and still haven't had.

Comments or our Story question box — we're answering all of them this weekend. No pitch, just answers.

Most management problems started at the hiring stage.
"They're not doing what I expected" → was it ever written down?
"They need constant supervision" → was the role ever defined?
A job description isn't paperwork. It's the agreement you'll both point at for two years.
That's the unglamorous thing we're building. Waitlist in bio.

15 minutes a month. 4 questions. Cheapest retention tool there is.
1 What went well?
2 What's getting in your way?
3 Here's what I need next month
4 Anything you want to ask me?
The gap between "everything's fine" and "we need to talk" is where good people quietly decide to leave. Save this.

Hiring family: the most sensitive hire in any Nigerian business.
What decides how it goes isn't the relationship — it's whether the role was ever real.
→ Write the JD first. Wouldn't hire a stranger for it? It's a favour, not a role. → Interview them properly anyway → Agree upfront how work conversations happen
And the honest question: could you let them go if you had to?

Nobody trained you to manage people.
You were good at your trade. Then you hired someone and became a manager overnight.
The hard parts: telling someone their work isn't good enough · delegating without hovering · being the boss AND the friend.
The shift that helps most: stop managing the person, start managing the expectation. Save this.
