UNEMPLOYMENT MAY BE at a record high, but—don’t look now—lots of companies are actually hiring. So, your résumé caught someone’s eye? Great, you’ve got an interview. The catch is that you’re not being invited to the office, you’re going to be doing it via Zoom or some other video conferencing platform.

Interviewing via a Google Hangout is a lot different than meeting in person, but you don’t have to let that reality blow the job for you. To help your next video interview go as smoothly as possible, I’ve collected some tips from a number of experts and professionals who’ve been on both sides of the online interview dance.

You can still make an impression even if your F2F isn't IRL.

As the coronavirus pandemic continues to grip economies across the globe, few industries have been left untouched by the fallout, and that's having huge implications not only for the workforce but also the recruitment process.

Some companies have moved to freeze hiring until the economic impact of the virus is made clear, but many others are continuing to recruit in a bid to prevent a business slowdown.

Indeed, in some instances the virus has sparked new demand for professions related to infectious diseases, according to jobs site Glassdoor, which has recorded a more than doubling of job postings with keywords related to coronavirus this month, particularly within the government, healthcare, biotech and pharmaceuticals.

However, measures aimed at containing the outbreak, such as social distancing and work from home policies, have required companies to get creative with their recruitment processes, and many are turning to virtual methods, such as video conference calls.

As the coronavirus pandemic continues to grip economies across the globe, few industries have been left untouched by the fallout, and that's having huge implications not only for the workforce but also the recruitment process.

A new study from North Carolina State University and Microsoft finds that the technical interviews currently used in hiring for many software engineering positions test whether a job candidate has performance anxiety rather than whether the candidate is competent at coding. The interviews may also be used to exclude groups or favor specific job candidates.

“Technical interviews are feared and hated in the industry, and it turns out that these interview techniques may also be hurting the industry’s ability to find and hire skilled software engineers,” says Chris Parnin, an assistant professor of computer science at NC State and co-author of a paper on the work. “Our study suggests that a lot of well-qualified job candidates are being eliminated because they’re not used to working on a whiteboard in front of an audience.”

Technical interviews in the software engineering sector generally take the form of giving a job candidate a problem to solve, then requiring the candidate to write out a solution in code on a whiteboard – explaining each step of the process to an interviewer.

The design of "technical interviews" is hurting the tech sector.

There has never been a greater need for students to graduate from tertiary institutions with top grades than now, and this is made even more demanding with the fact that most of the top multinational firms will only recruit the best of the best; that is, those with stellar grades.

In Nigeria, top grades entails coming out of the University with a First Class or 2.1, while for the polytechnic graduate it is distinction or Upper Credit. Truth is, coming out of the tertiary institutions with such top grades is not always easy, and is not often a determinant of how intelligent the graduate is.

While I don’t advocate coming out of the university and polytechnic with anything less than the best grades, it still remains a fact that colleges will still graduate students with 2.2, and even Third Class.

I have met some graduates that came with such lower grades; even interviewed some of them. I will say here that some are even better equipped and intelligent academically than some of the so-called top students that came out with stellar grades.

The purpose of this article is to give tips that will help those with lower grades to forge ahead and land those juicy jobs that they think are so elusive.

Let’s get on with it already!
