Are interviews still making you nervous?

Did you read the job description?

Let me guess; you saw the job title (HR Officer.)
Saw the salary.
Saw the location.
And you applied. Cool stuff

Then you sit in the interview and get hit with ⬇️

Tell us about a time you handled a difficult employee relations issue.

And you freeze.

Not because you have never done it. But because you did not realise employee relations was even part of this role.

Let me tell you a secret.

The job description is the answer key.

Every single question that panel asks is pulled straight from there.

The competencies they listed.

The responsibilities they highlighted.

The words they repeated three times.

That was never filler. That was the interview written down in advance and handed to you before you even showed up.

When you actually understand what a role requires, you stop guessing what they want to hear.

You start tailoring every answer to the exact skills they are looking for even the transferable ones.

So please, read the job description and then read it again.

Because the candidate who understands the role will beat the one who just wanted the job. Every single time.

I reject candidates before I open their CV. And yes, it's because of the file name

I've opened enough CVs to know exactly what is coming before I click.

Examples

CV_FINAL_final.docx
CV_FINAL_final2_UPDATED.docx
MY CV NEW ONE (1) docx
Document1.pdf

And my personal favourite is CV FOR ANY JOB.docx
Sir and Ma. Which job is any job?

Your CV file name is the very first thing a recruiter sees.

Before your name.
Before your experience.
Before they open anything at all.

It sits in the inbox alongside forty other applications, quietly saying something about you.

And Document1. pdf is saying you did not care enough to check.

I am not saying anyone gets rejected over a file name but it forms an impression before your CV gets the chance to.
And impressions are doing a lot of work in that inbox.

So what should it look like?

Your name and the role nothing else (Judith Ike - VP Human Resources CV.pdf)

That is it. It takes eight seconds to rename a file and those eight seconds make you look organised, intentional and easy to work with before anyone reads a single line about you.

Do the eight seconds.

You interviewed her four times.

Panel one.
Panel two….
A quick final chat that lasted an hour.

Then you went quiet for five weeks. Not because anything was wrong. Because the decision maker was travelling.

Then budget needed re-approval. Then someone wanted one more perspective in the room. And when you finally called with the offer, she had already resumed somewhere else.

And the excuse is always dressed the same way.

We're being thorough.
We want to make the right choice.

You were not being thorough, you were being slow and those two things are not the same.

The best candidates are never sitting still waiting for you to make up your mind. They are interviewing elsewhere, weighing options, making decisions on their own timeline not yours.

Every extra week you spend deliberating is a week someone faster is closing.

More interview rounds do not produce better hires. They produce exhausted candidates and inflated expectations.

If your process needs five stages to identify one person, the problem is not the talent pool.

It is the process.

Cut the steps that exist only because we have always done it that way.

Communicate at every stage, even silence has a message and it is rarely the one you intend. Because the candidate you are still debating about?

Someone else already offered her the job.

Let me tell you about the most confident section on every Nigerian CV.

The References section.

Proudly and boldly listed out with serious titles and personal information down to address (I kid you not)

And the part that hurts me the most?

Nobody asked.

That space on your CV you used to list your uncle's friend who is a Director somewhere among others; you could have used it to show one more achievement.
One more skill.
One more reason to shortlist you.

Now let me tell you a little secret.

Companies that request references only do so AFTER you have become the preferred candidate.

After the interviews.
After they have made up their minds.

The reference check is not part of the audition o
It is part of the confirmation.

No recruiter is calling your referees to decide whether to shortlist you. We are calling to confirm what we have already decided.

So what should you do instead?

Remove the entire section. And if you absolutely must include something, one line is enough.
“References available upon request” or something more professional.

Even that is optional in 2026.

And please when the time comes inform your referee before you list them.

There is nothing more awkward than a referee answering a call about a candidate they have not spoken to since 2019. 😂

Your CV has one job, which is getting you into the room.

The references come after you have impressed everyone in it.

You think you’ve seen it all in HR until an employee walks in, not with their lawyer… but with their MOM.🫢

Every workplace has this crew.

Guess what? I have met all four of them.

But they forgot one. The one who does absolutely nothing and takes credit for everything.

The most dangerous member of the crew. 😂

Which one are you? And which one is your colleague?

Over the years, one thing has become increasingly clear to me:

Two candidates can have similar qualifications and experience, yet one gets shortlisted while the other doesn’t.

The difference is rarely luck.

It’s often the signals they send before the interview ever begins.

The way they present their experience.
The attention to detail in their application.
How they communicate.
How well they position themselves for the role.

These are things many professionals overlook until they start wondering why the interview invitations stopped coming.

This is a conversation worth having.

We’ll get into it soon.

Today let’s talk about The Men

One thing many men never say out loud is

“I’m tired.”

Tired of carrying responsibilities.
Tired of pretending everything is fine.
Tired of being strong all the time.

As men, we’ve been taught to provide, protect, and persevere.

But sometimes, we also need support.

This Men’s Mental Health Month, I want to remind every man reading this:

You don’t have to carry every burden alone.

Check on your friends.
Talk when things feel heavy.
Rest when you need to.
Ask for help when necessary.

Strength is not silence.
Take care of yourself too.
