IOM WORKSHOP : AN EXCHANGE ON PERTINENT ISSUES AND BEST PRACTICES RELATED TO LABOUR RECRUITMENT AND MIGRANT WORKER PROTECTION
DATE: DECEMBER 2019
HOSTED BY IOM REGIONAL OFFICE FOR WEST AND CENTRAL AFRICA AND IOM COTE D IVOIRE

The half-day workshop will be organized under the “Promoting Responsible Recruitment and Migrant Worker Protection from West Africa Abroad including to the Gulf Cooperation Countries” project funded by the Migrant Resource Allocation Fund (MIRAC) at the IOM Regional Office for West and Central Africa in coordination with IOM Cote d’Ivoire and IOM Nigeria.

The primary objective of the project is to promote responsible recruitment practices while improving the protection of migrant workers in the region. Building on existing regional research, the project will disseminate information on best practices and common challenges faced by government officials, private sector actors as well as civil society organisations in five countries (Senegal, Ghana, The Gambia, Côte d’Ivoire, and Nigeria) as well as foster regional cooperation on this subject matter. In line with the project objectives, the workshop in Nigeria will contribute to increasing awareness of issues related to labour recruitment and migrant worker protection while providing a platform for exchange and concrete contributions from stakeholders as to best practices, common difficulties and concrete recommendations for stakeholders in terms of supporting ethical recruitment practices at country-level.
Proposed Action
In the aim of addressing challenges related to labour recruitment, IOM will organize a workshop: “An Exchange on Pertinent Issues and Best Practices Related to Labour Recruitment and Migrant Worker Protection in Nigeria” The workshop will briefly present findings from IOM’s recent study on recruitment channels and practices and pertinent issues for migrant workers in the West African region and focus more specifically on the Guidance Manual on Best Practices in Labour Recruitment and Migrant Worker Protection elaborated by IOM. While this guidance manual targets different stakeholder groups (government, private employment agencies (PEAs), employers and potential migrant workers), specific discussion and feedback from participants will focus on the Private Sector, PEA, and Civil Society perspectives for this half-day workshop session. Feedback collected during this session will also be incorporated into the final version of the Guidance Manual prior to its dissemination at country-level.
Workshop Objectives
Primary objective: Discuss issues regarding labour recruitment in Nigeria and propose concrete recommendations for PEA and CSO stakeholders to be incorporated into IOM Guidance Manual
Outcome 1: Share best practices and common challenges associated with labour recruitment and migrant worker protection in Nigeria.
Outcome 2: Develop concrete recommendations for PEA and CSO stakeholders to address these challenges.
Expected Participants
Nigerian private employment agencies and Nigerian civil society organisations.
Facilitators
IOM Regional Office for West and Central Africa in Dakar, IOM Côte d’Ivoire.
