Every freelancer has that one client they wish they never said yes to.

Some clients pay you.

Others drain you.

Most freelancers donโ€™t fail because of poor skill.

They struggle because they accept the โ€˜wrong clientsโ€™.

Here are the three types of clients every freelancer should avoid:

๐ŸŸฆ 1. The โ€œI need this by tonightโ€ client
This client turns every task into an emergency.
They send work late, expect miracles and get upset when you set boundaries.
The truth is, they donโ€™t have a โ€œtime problem.โ€
They have a planning problem.

๐ŸŸจ 2. The unclear, always-changing client
They say, โ€œItโ€™s a simple task.โ€
But the scope keeps changing.
Instructions come in 10 messages.
Requirements shift mid-way.
You canโ€™t do great work when the goalpost moves every hour.

๐ŸŸฅ 3. The client who doesnโ€™t respect your work
This one is subtle.
They negotiate aggressively, question every charge or compare you to cheaper freelancers.
Good clients understand value.
Challenging clients only see cost.

Freelancers often accept these clients because they fear losing opportunities.

But hereโ€™s the truth:

Saying โ€œnoโ€ to the wrong client is how you create space for the right ones.

You donโ€™t need MORE clients.

You just need the RIGHT ones. The ones who respect your time, your skills and your effort.

Here is a question for freelancers, have you ever worked with one of these clients before? And what lessons can you share from your experience?

Many Malaysians want remote full-time work but very few know how rare it actually is.

I get this question from job seekers all the time.

โ€œIs it possible to find a full-time remote job in Malaysia?โ€

I always give them the honest answer.

Remote roles do exist here but they are nothing like what you see in the States, Europe or Australia.

Over there, fully remote work has become part of the norm.

In Malaysia, finding a full-time remote role still feels a bit like finding gold.

Itโ€™s rare.

And when those opportunities appear, they attract a lot of attention.

Everyone wants that balance, that flexibility, that freedom to work without being tied to a specific location.

The truth is many Malaysian companies still prefer an in-office environment.

Even after the pandemic, most organisations returned to the old structure because it feels familiar, predictable and easier to manage.

But the real barrier is not policies or tools.

Itโ€™s mindset.

It comes down to trust.

Trust that people will deliver even when no one is watching.

Trust that productivity is not measured by physical presence.

Trust that adults can manage their time, communicate and show results without being in the same room.

And while companies hold on to old habits, employees are moving in a different direction.

I see this especially with Gen Z candidates.

They want autonomy.

They want to work in environments that respect their need for balance.

They want to choose where they do their best work.

So when candidates ask me if remote work is possible in Malaysia, I say yes but with patience and realistic expectations.

The demand is rising much faster than the supply and the companies who truly embrace remote hiring are still the minority.

The real question is not whether remote jobs exist.

Itโ€™s whether our organisations are ready to shift how they think about work, trust and flexibility.

What do you think. Do you think Malaysia is truly ready to embrace fully remote roles?

Three offers. Three rejections. One reason.

Some things in hiring are hard to measure.

But trust is not one of them.

Recently, we helped a client hire for an HR role.

They identified strong candidates.

They interviewed well.

They moved fast.

They offered the job.

Not once.

Not twice.

Three offers. Three rejections.

When we followed up with the candidates, they all said the same thing.

They had read the reviews on Glassdoor and Jobstreet.

The feedback from former employees made them uncertain.

They didnโ€™t want to take the risk.

It reminded me of how most of us choose a restaurant.

Before deciding where to eat, we read reviews.

Not just the menu or the photos but what real people said about the experience.

A workplace is the same.

Candidates are not only looking at salary and responsibilities.

They are reading what it feels like to be inside the company.

They want to know the following:

๐ŸŸข Will I be treated fairly?

๐ŸŸก Will I be able to grow here?

๐Ÿ”ต Will my voice matter?

Company culture is no longer what leaders say it is.

It is what employees share, publicly or privately.

And it travels fast.

The cost of a poor reputation is not just turnover.

It is the talent you never get to meet.

What steps are you currently taking to build trust with future and existing employees?

Finding freelance work isnโ€™t the hard part. Staying consistent is.

Many freelancers in our community share the same experience. Some months feel full and exciting. Others feel slower and uncertain.

This doesnโ€™t mean youโ€™re doing anything wrong.

Different channels create different types of opportunities. The key is knowing how they work and choosing the ones that match your strengths.

Here are the most common places freelancers find work:

1. Online Platforms:

Upwork, Fiverr, PeoplePerHour, Guru.com, Freelancer.com, Facebook freelance groups.

These platforms are large marketplaces with constant demand. But the competition is equally strong. To stand out, freelancers need clear profiles, strong portfolios and consistent activity.

โœ… Easy to start
โœ… Many jobs posted daily
โœ… Good for building early experience
โŒ Highly competitive and price-driven
โŒ Platform fees reduce earnings
โŒ Some clients may treat freelancers as replaceable

2. LinkedIn Networking:

Be visible in your expertise. Share what you learn and what you do.

โœ… Higher quality clients
โœ… Leads to long-term relationships
โœ… Builds your professional identity
โŒ Requires patience and consistency
โŒ Results take time

3. Personal Referrals:

Referrals are built on trust and reliability.

โœ… Easier to secure
โœ… Higher trust from the start
โœ… Often becomes ongoing work
โŒ Hard to rely on if the network is small
โŒ Requires consistently strong delivery

4. Direct Outreach (Cold Messages / Emails):

Works best when your niche is clear.

โœ… You choose the clients you want
โœ… Can lead to meaningful retainer work
โœ… Builds confidence in communicating your value
โŒ Many messages may not get replies
โŒ Requires personalised, steady follow-up

5. Virtual Assistant Agencies & Freelance Recruitment Agencies (like The Virtual Connexion):

Agencies support both freelancers and clients to work smoothly.

โœ… More stable flow of opportunities
โœ… Support with contracts, invoicing, collection, mediation and coordination
โœ… Can lead to long-term or permanent roles
โŒ Requires professionalism and clear communication
โŒ Rates may vary by client and scope

There is no single best method.

But the most effective freelancers focus on just 2 or 3 channels, consistently.

Relationship builds trust. And trust leads to steady work.

Where have you found your most meaningful freelance opportunities?

Amazon has confirmed it will cut as many as 30,000 corporate jobs.

UPS is removing around 48,000 roles as part of a major reorganisation tied to reduced delivery volumes for Amazon packages.

These arenโ€™t just numbers. Theyโ€™re people, families and futures upended overnight.

The reasons behind these moves arenโ€™t uniform. Some are blunt cost cuts. Others reflect a real shift in how work gets done as automation and AI take on routine tasks.

Whatever the cause, retrenchment forces hard choices.. who to redeploy, who to let go, and how to support people through the transition.

If youโ€™ve ever run a layoff, you know itโ€™s not just about spreadsheets. Clear communication, fair severance, timely outplacement and reskilling options matter.

For those who remain, thereโ€™s survivor fatigue, knowledge gaps and pressure to deliver more with fewer people. For those leaving, the immediate need is practical help to land the next role.

Companies that handle this badly damage morale and brand. Companies that handle it well, with transparent reasoning, concrete support and opportunities to reskill where possible, reduce long term harm.

That means HR, L&D and senior leaders must work together on a plan that balances business needs with dignity and real, practical help for affected employees.

If youโ€™re leading a restructure, consider short term supports.. clear FAQs, recruiter partnerships, resume and interview coaching, and small reskilling stipends tied to roles youโ€™ll need next.

If your role is at risk from automation, ask which parts of your work are uniquely human and which can be redesigned or reskilled.

Iโ€™d love to hear from leaders, HR professionals and employees whoโ€™ve been through this.. what worked, what didnโ€™t, and what you wish youโ€™d known earlier.

Do you think AI will have a huge effect on your business in the next 12 months?

Are Gen-Z employees really โ€œjob hoppersโ€ or are they just clearer about what they want?

I hear this a lot. The quick take says theyโ€™re restless. The truth is simpler: theyโ€™re clear on what matters, and they wonโ€™t settle.

They grew up with constant change, fast tech, and wide-open options. If the role doesnโ€™t match their values or growth, they move on. Not out of disloyalty, but out of alignment.

What keeps them?

โœ… Work that feels useful and makes a difference
โœ… Flexibility with hours and location so life actually works
โœ… Real chances to learn and grow on the job
โœ… Managers who listen, support, and give feedback

The real hurdle isnโ€™t Gen-Z. Itโ€™s old systems built for a different time. Pay still matters, but retention now is about whether people feel seen, valued and invested in. When thatโ€™s true, they stay and they thrive.

Maybe the better question isnโ€™t โ€œWhy are they leaving?โ€

Itโ€™s โ€œWhat can we change so they want to stay?โ€

How do you think companies should adapt their approach to retain Gen-Z talent?
