Recently, a study on Racism in Recruitment was conducted by The Centre for Governance and Political Studies.
After reviewing the data we could find, we would like to use this instead as a study on resume formats.
NOT ALL RESUMES ARE CREATED EQUAL.
Some notes from our review.
1. When reviewing resumes of fresh graduates, there is more critical scrutiny applied (sorry!). 100s of applications are received per job post, so the recruiter looks at every detail.
2. The format used by Gabriel Liew is the BEST. In fact, this is the format (including colours and font) that we have been advising graduates to use.
3. When applying for more 'corporate' environments; banking, financial institutes, large MNCs... use a professional photo; light background with professional attire. Exactly like Gabriel and Nicola. Poor Saddiq looks like he's partied out or going to a party.
4. Experience (part-time, internship - doesn't matter) is very important to recruiters. Ensure it is placed high up on your resume. Unlike Thivakar's where it is like a footnote.
5. Bubbles and clouds are acceptable IF you are applying a company or industry where you know the culture is such. If you are looking for a job in a large corporate environment - don't add your favourite daffodils.
6. Soft skills matter. Nicola's and Gabriel's resumes have a laundry list that includes awards (awards are great!) and includes things like Public Speaking - which recruiters look for. They want the 'edge' factor.
Fret not, young ones. Opportunities are there for you. Now, clean up your resumes and go and find yourselves a good company to work with. :)
