New US cities emerge as key destinations for tech jobs

PARIS: In the US, remote working has prompted an exodus of technology workers from the traditional big hubs.

Cities like Atlanta and Miami have lured these workers, often to the delight of local communities.

But despite strong indicators of such decentralization, the trend may slow down somewhat with the return to the office taking place in many regions and at many companies.

Experts anticipated a sustained exodus from urban centers over time, and with it that of tech workers.

The pandemic has attracted them to regions outside the traditional big tech hubs in the United States, such as New York, Seattle and the San Francisco Bay Area.

According to a recent report from American think tank Brookings, remote workers in the tech field have been heading to other metropolises during the pandemic, such as Atlanta, Dallas, Miami and St Louis.

These cities are even referred to by the report as “Rising stars” of tech.

In 2020 alone, these cities showed “positive growth and add[ed] a combined 14,000 tech jobs.”

These cities were already gaining traction before the pandemic; for example, St Louis saw its tech growth rate increase from 3.9% (2015-2019) to 4.8% in 2020.

The pandemic and remote working have, to some extent, redrawn the map of tech job geography. Workers have favored smaller cities, sometimes to be closer to family or to prioritize material and mental comfort, or for monetary reasons.

Florida, particularly Miami, has been particularly attractive to tech workers, thanks in part to a favorable tax policy.

As for the “superstar” cities mentioned in the report, the tech centers of Seattle, San Francisco and Austin saw their growth rate slow somewhat in 2020, with only New York creating more jobs than in previous years.

Despite this, these cities have remained crucial technology hubs for the country and the sector.

Progress in workforce diversity

Interviewed by the media outlet Protocol.com, Mark Muro, one of the authors of the study, remains cautious regarding the importance of remote working in the increase in tech jobs in these medium-sized cities.

“I think that’s really an attraction for a sector that is under pressure to show progress on diversity,” he said.

He says the industry wants to diversify its talent and is approaching cities with respected public universities that can bring together a diverse and interesting pool of profiles.

Atlanta is one such city, where Airbnb has invested in building a new technology center and helping the city’s Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion develop more educational and training opportunities for the city’s children and young adults, Protocol.com reported in 2021.

Are we moving towards a decentralization of tech center's?

The think tank brings a new perspective to the geographical tone of tech workers, which may be setting the tone for a likely trend in the sector in the coming months.

“[T]he continued growth of the rising star metro areas – as well as accelerated job growth in dozens of other metro areas during the pandemic – suggests the possibility of a genuine adjustment of the nation’s highly concentrated tech geography in the coming years,” outline the report authors.

At present there remains significant concentration of jobs in tech hubs, and the return to the office is likely to bring back remote workers who left for other regions.

Starting April 11, Apple will ask its US employees to return once a week, increasing to three times by the end of May. Microsoft has already asked its employees to make plans to return to the office in early April.

Malaysia needs more workforce on border reopening.

This is because the sector is critical for Malaysia, as a trading country, to ensure the trade and business activities running.

There will be greater demand for talent to fill jobs in the aviation, logistics and hospitality sector in light of the reopening of international borders and the recovery of the aviation industry.

AirAsia X Bhd chairman Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz (picture) said higher learning institutions must meet the growing need within the maritime and wider logistic ecosystem, and strive to build graduates with good quality to ensure the success in the industry.

“The players and educators need to transform education, nurturing skillful graduates who are resilient, future proof and able to compete on a global level,” she said Meritus University’s graduation ceremony. The university is under Halim Mazmin Group’s education division.

She also emphasized that the government must maintain the usage of English language in the education system, especially in maritime, aviation and business sectors to expand globally.

“To remain relevant and compete in regional and global businesses, English is key, and we cannot go back in time and reverse the whole system just because we want to preserve the national identity,” she said in a press conference.

“Instead of strengthening the national language, we should think of giving more options to expose the public to other foreign languages.”

Meanwhile, Halim Mazmin director and founder Tan Sri Halim Mohammad said as a trading country, this sector is critical for Malaysia to ensure the trade and business activities running.

“Therefore, we need enough manpower to sustain that and attract more young talent to venture into the industry.

“The education system also must meet the needs and provide a holistic education to create a future-ready and proven talent for the industry,” he added.

He encourages school leavers to discover the opportunities in the aviation sector, hospitality and maritime await them at Meritus University and Meritus College.

The group celebrated its maiden graduation yesterday, honoring 122 students from the group education arm comprising Meritus University, Meritus College and HM Aerospace (pilot training program).

“Majority of our graduates today have successfully completed their training and become sought after among employers in their respective industries.”

He added that, in the field of aviation, most of the graduates have been accepted by airlines around the globe apart from Malaysia Airlines Bhd and AirAsia Bhd.

According to Halim, the maritime industry plays an important role in the country’s economy and contributes about 40% to Malaysia’s GDP.

“There are about 160,000 job opportunities under the country’s five-year Maritime Industry Master Plan 2017-2022,” he concluded.

An Amazon applicant who Jeff Bezos hired ‘on the spot’ shares 5 ways to ‘instantly impress’ during the job interview

I started my 12-year career at Google in 2006, where I held positions as chief of staff and executive business partner. Before that, I worked at Amazon as an executive business partner to Jeff Bezos.

After spending so much time with some of the world’s most successful and influential leaders, I learned what to look for in new candidates. In fact, Bezos hired me on the spot after my first interview with him in 2002.

Based on the hundreds of interviews I’ve conducted throughout my decades-long career, here are my top tips on how to instantly impress a hiring manager during the job interview:

1. Tell unforgettable stories behind your hobbies and interests

The people I hired or worked with at Google were proudly quirky. They had interesting hobbies, depths of knowledge, and passions outside of their jobs.

But they did more than just say “I like to garden” or “I love building furniture.” Instead, they would introduce how they came to love or develop interest in something through thoughtful and engaging ways.

For example, a candidate who was an avid rock climber talked about how it’s a meaningful activity because her dad had always dreamed of climbing Mount Everest, but never got the chance to — so now it’s one of her goals in life.

Whatever your hobbies or interests are, tell a story or experience about it that your interviewer won’t soon forget.

2. Talk about what you don’t know, but are eager to learn

No one wants to hire a know-it-all.

One of the most common mistakes candidates make is overemphasizing all the things they’re good at. To me, that’s a red flag that tells me they like to stay in their lane and play it safe, rather than seek out new challenges and experiences.

Talk about what areas you’re interested in improving, skills you want to develop, and ambitious goals you want to take on one day.

3. Use teamwork words like ‘we’ and ‘my team’

It’s easy to say that you work well with others. There’s no way for a hiring manager to tell whether you really do have teamwork and collaboration skills.

But when you say “I” too much, it immediately indicates that you can get easily distracted with trying to keep score of your own wins and get individual credit.

Highlighting team successes, and not just personal ones, is a far more sophisticated and rare skill set. Make it a point to say “we accomplished [X]” or “my team did a great job doing [X].”

4. Talk about ideas that didn’t work

Google is famous for being quick to scrap projects that don’t work early on. We celebrated our failures because it was an opportunity to learn and be better.

Instead of feeling discouraged, the best employees are energized and motivated by their failures. So share examples of times when you’ve had to pivot from a passion project and apply what you learned to a new one.

This will be seen as an asset, not a failure.

5. Go beyond the job description and have a vision of the future

The last thing a manager wants to hear is a repeat of the job description they wrote up.

I was three years into working at Google when I entered former CEO Eric Schmidt’s office with the objective of taking the next step in my career. I told him I was ready to be chief of staff. I put together a roadmap of what the role could look like and how I could develop the skills to take the company to the next level.

I’m not saying you should go into the interview pitching a completely different job title. The point is to show that you have a vision of what your role could look like in a year or two.

Malaysia's jobless rate in 4Q21 fell to lowest since Covid-19, says DOSM

Malaysia's employment continued to trend up in the fourth quarter of 2021 (4Q21) as demand for labor surged, pushing the national unemployment rate to 4.3% — the lowest level since the Covid-19 pandemic hit this country — said the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM).

The unemployment rate declined 0.5% year-on-year (y-o-y) from 4.8% in 4Q20, while the number of unemployed persons fell 8.7% to 694,000 from 760,700 a year ago.

"This was also the first time unemployment eased to below 700,000 since the pandemic hit," said the DOSM in a statement.

In the same statement, DOSM chief statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the national labor market regained momentum in 4Q21 as more businesses operated with full employment capacity and longer operational hours.

"During the quarter, schools and educational institutions were opened with admission of students in stages. On the social front, the removal of interstate travel ban coupled with permission to organize social and recreational events also stimulated domestic tourism activity. The positive development resulted in the gross domestic product rebounding by 3.6% after a contraction in the previous quarter," he said.

In terms of labor supply, higher labor participation was observed in 4Q21, reflected by labor force participation rate (LFPR), which edged up 0.2 percentage point y-o-y to 68.7% (4Q20: 68.5%).

The number of people in the labor force also rose 1.3% to record 16.14 million, predominantly contributed by the increase of 1.8% in employed persons, which accounted for 15.44 million persons (4Q20: 15.16 million).

Meanwhile, total jobs in the economic sector picked up for the first time after continuous declines for the last six quarters, registering growth of 0.9% y-o-y to 8.53 million jobs (4Q20: 8.46 million).

Although it remained lower than the pre-pandemic period, the number of jobs in 4Q21 was the highest during the public health crisis.

As for 2021, DOSM's preliminary estimates based on monthly average data indicated that the number of employed persons rose 3% to 15.4 million in 2021, exceeding 15.07 million recorded during pre-pandemic period in 2019.

However, the number of unemployed persons also increased further by 4.3% to 741,400 (2020: 711,000).

The unemployment rate recorded during 2021 was 4.6%, going up 0.1 percentage point from 4.5% in 2020.

Thus, the number of labor force rose by 3% to 16.14 million persons while LFPR edged up by 0.2 percentage point to 68.6%.

Last year, labor demand also improved as jobs in the private sector increased to 8.53 million after declining 2.4% to 8.46 million in 2020.

Nevertheless, the level of jobs in 2021 was still lower than the 8.66 million jobs recorded in 2019 amid the socio-economic restrictions to contain the pandemic, which prolonged into 2021.

"Undoubtedly, the Covid-19 crisis has impacted the global economy and the labor market. Malaysia is not an exception to this matter as the country has implemented multiple socio-economic restrictions to contain the public health crisis.

"It is anticipated that some of the effects on the labor market structure may be persistent even after Malaysia [enters the] endemic phase, with some sectors and occupations permanently shrinking while others expanding," said the DOSM.

Mohd Uzir also said that Malaysia's labor market in 4Q21 improved considerably amid the National Recovery Plan (NRP) compared with in 4Q20 when the country was under the Recovery Movement Control Order.

"Moving into the year 2022, the whole nation was in Phase 4 of the NRP with reopening of more socio-economic activities and further loosening of previous containment measures. Instead of yet another nationwide restriction, targeted mechanism designed by the government implemented to keep the situation at bay may give confidence to the businesses to sustain their operations and subsequently strengthen the labor market," he added.
