The Story Behind Women’s Day:
1. Women workers’ protest (1908)
More than 15,000 women workers in New York marched in the streets.
They protested for:
•Better working conditions
•Shorter working hours
•Better pay
•The right to vote
At that time, women were treated very unfairly in workplaces.
2. The idea of a special day (1910)
A German activist named Clara Zetkin suggested that there should be a global day to recognize women and fight for their rights.
She proposed this idea at the International Socialist Women's Conference in Copenhagen.
Women from many countries agreed.
3. First celebration (1911)
The first International Women’s Day was celebrated in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland.
Millions of women attended rallies demanding:
•Voting rights
•The right to work
•Equality
4. March 8 becomes the official date
Later, the date March 8 became fixed after women workers protested again in Russia in 1917 for “Bread and Peace” during World War I.
Eventually the United Nations officially recognized International Women’s Day in 1975.
