Early last week, the International Labour Organization (ILO) distanced itself from Bestinet Sdn Bhd and its IT platform, which the Malaysian government is using to recruit foreign workers.

The denial by ILO that it endorsed Bestinet’s Foreign Worker Centralised Management System (FWCMS) was met with a quick response from the company itself. In a nutshell, Bestinet acknowledges ILO’s stance but stated that the FWCMS had gone through several layers of approval by the Malaysian government.

Malaysia’s “strategic” location and high demand for low-wage migrant labour are among the reasons the country remains a hotbed for human trafficking, say two rights NGOs.

Tenaganita's Glorene Das says the ‘complex’ recruitment process also contributes to the problem.

Malaysia’s labour market is not slowing down.

According to the latest Q1 2026 statistics, labour demand has surged to 923,000 jobs, marking continued year-on-year growth — with the services sector leading the expansion. 🇲🇾

This is more than just a statistic.
It signals how rapidly businesses are evolving, restructuring, digitalising, and competing for talent.

For HR practitioners and business leaders, this raises several important realities:

📌 Talent shortages will continue to intensify in high-demand sectors.
📌 Retention strategies can no longer rely purely on salary.
📌 Workforce planning must become more data-driven and future-focused.
📌 Upskilling and reskilling are no longer optional initiatives.
📌 Industrial Relations knowledge becomes even more critical as workforce movement increases.

As hiring accelerates, organisations that fail to build sustainable people strategies may struggle not because of lack of business opportunities — but because they cannot retain the right people.

The future of HR is no longer administrative.
It is strategic, analytical, and deeply connected to business sustainability.

Malaysia’s workforce landscape is changing fast.
The question is: Is your organisation prepared for it?

For many, the word “construction” still brings up a familiar image – workers in hard hats, labouring under the sun, surrounded by dust, scaffolding, and the constant noise of drilling and hammering.

Long seen as tough manual work, this industry is evolving to become tech-driven - but perceptions are slow to change.
