The Japan Foundation is Japan’s only institution dedicated to carrying out comprehensive international cultural exchange programs throughout the world.

Established in 1972, the Japan Foundation creates opportunities for people-to-people interactions through the various activities and information services with the objective of deepening mutual understanding between the people of Japan and other countries/regions. The Malaysian office was established in October 1989 and its status upgraded to Cultural Centre in February 1992. Three years later in April 1995, the Language Centre was formed under the umbrella of the Cultural Centre. The primary objective of JFKL is to develop mutual understanding between people through culture and language within the region. The office also facilitates and supports the exchange of personnel and experts who work in the field of Arts, Culture, Humanities and Social Sciences. Other objectives include developing a pool of local expertise in the field of Japanese language teaching and providing a better learning environment through our original language courses, development of new resources including e-learning materials, and events such as speech contest.

[𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁] 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗝𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗲-𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀 (𝗝-𝗥𝗘𝗧𝗥𝗔) 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲

With the support of the Kamenori Foundation, JFKL conducted the Regional Training for Japanese-Language Secondary School Teachers (J-RETRA) in three locations across Malaysia: Kuantan (4–6 August), Penang (18–20 August), and Kuala Lumpur (22–24 September).

The training brought together Japanese-language teachers from different parts of the country to learn, reflect, and exchange ideas on Japanese-language teaching. Through a variety of lectures, hands-on activities, workshops, and sharing sessions, participants explored practical approaches to language teaching, including second language acquisition, active learning, the use of teaching materials, ideas for classroom activities, and continuous professional development.

The programme also provided opportunities for participants to share their own teaching experiences and ideas, fostering connections and mutual learning among Japanese-language teachers across Malaysia.

Thank you to all 76 teachers who participated in and contributed to J-RETRA 2026. We hope the knowledge, ideas, and connections gained through the training will continue to support their teaching practice and Japanese-language education in Malaysia.

We would also like to extend our sincere appreciation to the Kamenori Foundation for the continued support in enhancing Japanese-language education in secondary schools.
