Introducing The Local Review: City Signals from Malaysian Cities — a new series by URBANICE Malaysia under the Malaysia SDG Cities programme.

This series translates Malaysia’s Voluntary Local Reviews into simple city stories: what each city is doing well, what gaps remain, and what needs to happen next.

First feature: Batu Pahat, Johor

As one of the cities under Malaysia SDG Cities, Batu Pahat’s VLR tells the story of a city with strong economic foundations — shaped by manufacturing, agriculture, retail and coastal trade — now facing its next sustainability test.

The findings show clear progress. Batu Pahat’s unemployment improved to 1.4% in 2023, reflecting a resilient local economy. But the VLR also highlights several signals that require attention: around 1 in 4 industrial units remain vacant, public transport makes up only 5% of daily travel, and the city generated 72.04 million kg of waste in 2022, with recycling at only 0.15%

Climate risk is also becoming more visible, with flooding and coastal erosion causing RM104.79 million in losses in 2023

The message is clear: Batu Pahat has strong momentum. The next step is making growth cleaner, better connected and more climate-resilient.

URBANICE Malaysia at WUF13, Baku.

At the Thirteenth Session of the World Urban Forum, Malaysia’s presence was anchored by leadership, substance and partnership — advancing global conversations on housing, safe and resilient cities, and sustainable urbanisation.

Through the Malaysia Pavilion, URBANICE Malaysia showcased Malaysia’s approach to housing and city development, while convening 3 main sessions, co-organising 6 partner-led sessions, contributing as speakers across other platforms, and supporting the Asia-Pacific Urban Agenda Platform (AP-UAP) session to strengthen regional tracking of the New Urban Agenda.

These engagements reinforced Malaysia’s role as an active contributor to the global urban agenda, bringing forward practical perspectives on housing delivery, SDG localization, city-led implementation and regional collaboration.

Our appreciation to the Ministry of Housing and Local Government Malaysia, high-level delegates, international partners, cities, UN agencies and all collaborators who contributed to this meaningful participation.

A full report on URBANICE Malaysia’s WUF13 participation, key outcomes and follow-up actions will be shared soon.
