More jobs don't always mean better careers.
Malaysia isn't facing a shortage of jobs. it's facing a shortage of decent work.
Although employment opportunities remain available, many workers are still searching for roles that provide fair wages, job security, meaningful career progression, and adequate social protection. Meanwhile, employers continue to face difficulties in finding candidates with the right skills, highlighting the ongoing mismatch between workforce needs and available talent.
As the labour market evolves, the focus should not only be on creating more jobs, but on creating better jobs, ones that enable individuals to build sustainable careers while supporting long-term business growth.
Building a stronger workforce requires a collective effort from employers, educators, and policymakers to improve job quality, strengthen workforce readiness, and invest in continuous skills development.
What do you think makes a job truly "decent" in today's workforce?
