More jobs don't always mean better careers.

Malaysia isn't facing a shortage of jobs. it's facing a shortage of decent work.
Although employment opportunities remain available, many workers are still searching for roles that provide fair wages, job security, meaningful career progression, and adequate social protection. Meanwhile, employers continue to face difficulties in finding candidates with the right skills, highlighting the ongoing mismatch between workforce needs and available talent.
As the labour market evolves, the focus should not only be on creating more jobs, but on creating better jobs, ones that enable individuals to build sustainable careers while supporting long-term business growth.

Building a stronger workforce requires a collective effort from employers, educators, and policymakers to improve job quality, strengthen workforce readiness, and invest in continuous skills development.

What do you think makes a job truly "decent" in today's workforce?

Malaysia's unemployment rate has fallen to 2.9%, indicating a strong labour market. However, experts warn that the low unemployment rate masks a growing issue
📌 Low unemployment doesn't always mean quality employment While more Malaysians are employed, many graduates are working in positions below their qualifications, limiting their career growth and earning potential.
📌 Underemployment is a growing concern An estimated 2.06 million Malaysians were in skill-related underemployment in 2024, highlighting the gap between graduates' qualifications and available job opportunities.
📌 Skills mismatch remains a major challenge Many employers struggle to find candidates with the right skills, while graduates continue to face difficulties securing roles that match their education and expertise.
📌 Creating better jobs is just as important Experts emphasise the need for more high-skills, well-paying jobs and stronger collaboration between universities and industries to better prepare graduates for the evolving workforce.

Landing your next opportunity isn't always about submitting more job applications. Many roles are filled through recruiters, professional networks, and referrals before they're even advertised. That's why building your personal brand, expanding your network, and staying visible to recruiters can make a significant difference in your job search. Take the time to update your LinkedIn profile, showcase your expertise, and connect with industry professionals. Sometimes, the right opportunity comes from being seen, not just from applying.

How are you making yourself visible to recruiters?
