👔 MALTESE SMES FACE HIRING DIFFICULTIES

✅ 66% of Maltese SMEs struggle to find skilled workers.
→ Malta recorded the highest proportion in the EU of SMEs reporting difficulties recruiting skilled employees, compared with the EU average of 46%.

✅ Medium-sized businesses face the greatest recruitment challenges.
→ 61% of companies employing between 50 and 249 workers reported difficulties filling vacancies, compared with 41% of micro-enterprises.

✅ Malta relies heavily on workers from outside the EU.
→ 48% of Maltese SMEs had attempted to recruit workers from third countries, more than three times the EU average of 14%.

✅ Construction and other vocational roles are in high demand.
→ International recruitment is particularly linked to shortages in jobs such as construction workers, food preparation staff, cleaners and transport operators.

✅ Language and administrative procedures remain key challenges.
→ Employers identified language requirements and lengthy immigration and administrative processes as major obstacles when recruiting workers from outside the EU.

👥 MALTA RECORDS 3.4% RISE IN EMPLOYMENT

✅ More people are now in employment.
→ The number of people in work reached 339,935 in the second quarter of 2026, an increase of 3.4% compared with the same period last year.

✅ Average monthly basic pay increased by 6.2%.
→ Employees earned an average basic salary of €2,282 per month, up from €2,148 a year earlier.

✅ Managers recorded the highest average salaries.
→ Average basic pay ranged from €1,412 for elementary occupations to €3,657 for managers.

✅ The gender pay difference remains visible.
→ Women earned an average basic salary of €2,247, compared with €2,308 for men during the second quarter.

✅ The employment rate among working-age people reached 80.1%.
→ The employment rate for people aged 15 to 64 increased from 79.7% a year earlier, with the rate at 85.1% for men and 73.9% for women.

💶 MALTA DROPS TO 15TH IN EU MINIMUM WAGE RANKING

✅ Malta has fallen to 15th place among the 22 EU countries with a statutory national minimum wage.
→ Malta previously ranked 8th in both 2016 and 2021.

✅ Several European countries have overtaken Malta over the past decade.
→ Slovenia, Lithuania, Poland, Cyprus, Portugal, Croatia and Greece now rank above Malta.

✅ Malta’s statutory minimum wage in 2026 stands at €229.44 per week.
→ This works out at approximately €994 per month gross, including cost-of-living adjustments.

✅ Minimum wages have grown rapidly across several EU countries.
→ Eurofound found that statutory minimum wages gained real purchasing power in 21 of the 22 EU countries with a national minimum wage.

✅ The ranking is based on gross minimum wages — not take-home pay.
→ Tax, social security contributions, benefits and differences in living costs are not reflected in the ranking.

📉 MALTA RECORDS ONE OF EU’S LOWEST INFLATION RATES

✅ Malta’s inflation rate fell to 2% in June.
→ Annual inflation eased from 2.1% in May, reaching its lowest level since February 2025.

✅ Malta’s rate remained below both EU averages.
→ Malta’s 2% inflation rate was lower than the euro area average of 2.8% and the EU average of 2.9%.

✅ Only three EU countries recorded lower inflation.
→ Sweden, Czechia and Denmark had lower annual inflation rates than Malta in June.

✅ Restaurants and accommodation contributed most to inflation.
→ Higher prices for restaurant services, meat and air travel were among the main contributors to Malta’s inflation rate.

✅ Some prices continued to fall.
→ Clothing and footwear prices fell by 3.9%, while information and communication prices decreased by 1.6%.

🧮 GDP GREW BY 3.9% IN FIRST THREE MONTHS OF 2026

✅ Malta’s economy continued to expand
→ GDP grew by 3.9% in the first quarter of 2026, continuing to outperform the euro area average.

✅ Services remained the main growth driver
→ The services sector contributed 3.2% to real GDP growth, led by trade, transport, accommodation and food services.

✅ Property prices continued to rise
→ Residential property prices increased by 6.7% annually, driven by tourism and migrant worker demand.

✅ Employment increased
→ Total employment rose by 3.3% annually, with strong growth in full-time roles in arts, entertainment and accommodation.

✅ Job vacancies reached record levels
→ Malta recorded 10,022 job vacancies in the first quarter of 2026, highlighting continued tightness in the labour market.
