Located in the remote Nevada desert near the dry bed of Groom Lake, Area 51 may be the most famous military installation in the world that doesn’t officially exist. Though you can see the complex’s buildings in satellite images, it doesn’t appear on any public U.S. government maps. For decades, conspiracy theorists and UFOlogists have speculated that the government uses Area 51 to experiment with extraterrestrials and their spacecrafts. Some have connected the site with the alleged government coverup of a 1947 incident in which an alien spacecraft supposedly crashed near Roswell, New Mexico; others have even claimed that the moon landing was staged right there in the Nevada desert. Skeptics may find all this hard to believe—but if it’s not true, then what really goes on at Area 51?

Over the years, the CIA, U.S. Air Force and aerospace company Lockheed Martin have all used Area 51 as a staging ground for test flights of experimental aircraft (a.k.a. “black aircraft”). According to documents declassified in 2007, in the 1950s and 1960s Area 51 was home to a top-secret Cold War-era program known as Oxcart, which aimed to develop a spy plane that would be undetectable in the air and could be used for information gathering missions behind the Iron Curtain. The result was the Archangel-12, or A-12, which could travel at speeds of more than 2,000 miles an hour and take clear pictures of objects on the ground from an altitude of 90,000 feet. Other well-known aircraft tested there include the A-12’s successor, the SR-71 Blackbird, as well as the F-117 Nighthawk stealth fighter. From the ground, such experimental aircraft traveling at Mach-3 speeds undoubtedly resembled some people’s idea of what alien spacecraft would look like, helping to explain why so many people reported UFO sightings in the skies above Nevada over the years. Such sightings—along with the secrecy surrounding the Groom Lake site—fueled the rumors swirling around Area 51, and helped create the air of mystery it retains today.

one look at the PL-01 Concept Tank, i bet you didn’t think it is a machine of this era. it looks more like a tank pulled from the pages of a science friction graphic novel. anyway, this tank is very much the real-deal, or at least soon-to-be a real deal and it packs quite a punch in terms of the technologies that goes into it. we are not war advocates, but this war machine sure looks super cool, made even more cooler by the invisibility cloak it is wearing. yes. you heard us. invisibility cloak. developed by Obrum, which is part of Poland Defence Holdings (PDH), the PL-01 Concept is based around BAE Systems CV90 AFV which we saw way back in 2011 and features the super cool Adaptiv systems that will make the vehicle invisible to infrared by matching the tank’s skin to the infrared signature of the surroundings. in this way, the tank will be invisible to infrared-based weapons and devices, though it is still visible to naked eyes.

it also features radar absorbing material to reduce its visibility to airborne crafts and the Adaptiv systems can also mimic other types of vehicle or common objects so that what the enemies see through their infrared devices will be just some harmless car, thereby greatly increase its survivability. additionally, these hexagonal pieces also allows it to mark itself to avoid friendly fire. Obrum PL-01 Concept Tank with Adaptiv Systems defense systems include launchers to counter incoming rockets and missiles, a bunch of sensors to aid in detecting threats, exhaust cooling system to reduce the vehicle heat signature and smoke gr***de launchers integrated into the turret. the effective use of the technologies allows the tank to cut down a crew of 4-5 men, typical of a main battle tank, to just 3. it has a modular unmanned turret, mated to a 120mm smoothbore cannon (105mm is also doable) with a fully automated loading unit that enables it to unleash around six rounds in a minute.

the tank’s main armament is complemented by a 7.62 coaxial gun and remotely controlled weapon station with a 7.62mm or 12.7mm machine gun or 40mm gr***de machine gun for close proximity attacks. additional features include day/night commander’s panoramic sight, day/night gunner’s sight, constraint surrounding panorama observation system, a rear hatch for loading of ammunition and evacuation, and modular additional armor system for both turret and chassis. the technologies incorporated ensures survivability and battle effectiveness, and could well be described as a dream come true for tank crews.

B-2 Engineer Convicted of Selling Military Secrets To China

A former B-2 stealth bomber engineer convicted of selling military secrets to China is due to be sentenced in federal court on Monday.

Noshir Gowadia, 66, faces up to life in prison for his conviction on 14 counts, including conspiracy, communicating national defence information to aid a foreign nation, and violating the arms export control act.

Chief U.S. District Judge Susan Oki Mollway is due to issue her sentence after listening to arguments from the prosecution and defence. Gowadia, who has been in custody without bail since his 2005 arrest, is also expected to have an opportunity to make a statement.

A federal jury in August found Gowadia guilty after deliberating for six days. They had heard 39 days of evidence over nearly four months. The jury acquitted him on three counts.

Prosecutors said Gowadia helped China design a stealth cruise missile to get money to pay the $15,000-a-month mortgage on his multimillion dollar home overlooking the ocean in Haiku on Maui. They said he pocketed at least $110,000 from the sale of military secrets.

They said Gowadia showed his Chinese contacts how his stealth cruise missile design would be effective against U.S. air-to-air missiles.

Gowadia's defence attorneys said it's true the engineer gave China the design for a stealth cruise missile exhaust nozzle but he based his work on unclassified, publicly available information. Gowadia's son has said his father plans to appeal.

The sentencing comes just weeks after China conducted a flight test of its new J-20 stealth fighter during a visit to Beijing by U.S. Defence Secretary Robert Gates.

The Jan. 11 flight was held at an airfield in Chengdu, where prosecutors say Gowadia delivered an oral presentation on classified stealth technology in 2003.

The city is home to the Chengdu Aircraft Design Institute and is a centre for Chinese fighter aircraft and cruise missile reseach and development.

Gowadia helped design the propulsion system for the B-2 bomber when he worked at Northrop Corp., now known as Northrop Grumman Corp., between 1968 and 1986.

Born in India, he moved to the U.S. for postgraduate work in the 1960s and became a U.S. citizen about a decade later. He retired from Northrop for health reasons in 1986, two years before the B-2 made its public debut.

Gowadia moved to Maui in 1999 from the U.S. mainland where he had been doing consulting work after retiring from Northrop.

QinetiQ

Chinese cyberspies stole a good majority of U.K.-based defense contractor QinetiQ‘s wealth of U.S. military research, according to Bloomberg. The theft happened over a three-year period in which QinetiQ seemed to make all the wrong moves.

We’re all aware cyberespionage is a growing threat in the United States, where military secrets are of high value. This group, known as the Comment Crew, hacked its way into QinetiQ’s North American division’s systems in 2007. The defense contractor was originally notified of the breach by a Naval Criminal Investigative Service employee who found two infected computers at QinetiQ’s McLean, Va., headquarters. The discovery was tangential to another Naval Criminal Investigative Service project that revealed a great many more compromised defense contractors. But this information was left out of the report to QinetiQ.

Bloomberg chronicles what happened from there. It looked at internal QinetiQ emails as revealed by Anonymous’ hack on HBGary, revealing a string of poor decisions. Security firms HBGary, as well as Terremark and Mandient, came in to deal with the intrusions. But HBGary’s monitoring software slowed employee computers down so much they actually removed it with permission from their IT departments.

Richard Clarke, the former special adviser to George W. Bush, explained to Bloomberg that this could wind up being a huge embarrassment if we ever get into a conflict with China. “We try out all these sophisticated weapons systems, and they don’t work,” he explained.

Mandient revealed the Comment Crew to the masses earlier this year as a specialized group of hackers working for the People’s Liberation Army. Comment Crew is otherwise known as PLA 61398.

One of the ways the Comment Crew got into further systems was by stealing passwords and simply logging in as if they were employees working remotely. Mandient had pointed out this to QinetiQ, suggesting a fix, which might have been two-factor authentication. QinetiQ did not act on the advice.

Furthermore, when future attacks were uncovered –such as one reported by NASA — the company continued to treat them as isolated events instead of as an organized attempt to steal what eventually would be secret military data on drones, robotics, and more. Bloomberg reports the amount as being close to 3.3 million Excel spreadsheets.

Terremark senior vice president Christopher Day spoke to Bloomberg, saying,”There was virtually no place we looked where we didn’t find them.”

Last May, QinetiQ was given a new contract from the U.S. Transportation Department for $4.7 million.

We have reached out to QinetiQ for comment on the report and will update this story upon hearing back.

Project Grudge

While Area 51 was not a top-secret base designed to study extraterrestrials, the U.S. Air Force did study the existenceof UFOs. Project Grudge was a short-lived program launched in 1949 to study unidentified flying objects. The mission followed an earlier program, known as Project Sign, which published a report in early 1949 stating that while some UFOs seemed to be actual aircraft, there was not enough data to determine their origins.

Critics of Project Grudge said the program solely set out to debunk UFO reports, and very little actual research was conducted. In his book on the topic, Edward J. Ruppelt, Air Force Captain and director of Project Grudge, wrote: “[I]t doesn’t take a great deal of study of the old UFO files to see that standard intelligence procedures were not being followed by Project Grudge. Everything was being evaluated on the premise that UFOs couldn’t exist. No matter what you see or hear, don’t believe it.”

Project 1794

In late 2012, the U.S. Air Force declassified a trove of documents, including records of a secret program to build a flying saucer-type aircraft designed to shoot down Soviet bombers. The ambitious program, called Project 1794, was initiated in the 1950s, and a team of engineers was tasked with building a disc-shape vehicle capable of traveling at supersonic speeds at high altitudes.

The declassified documents reveal plans for the plane to reach a top speed of Mach 4 (four times the speed of sound), and reach an altitude of 100,000 feet (30,480 meters). The project’s estimated cost was more than $3 million, which in today’s dollars would be more than $26 million.
Project 1794 was canceled in December 1961 after tests suggested the flying saucer design was aerodynamically unstable and would likely be uncontrollable at high speeds (let alone supersonic speeds).
