🌞🌿 Līgo is coming – Latvia’s biggest summer celebration! 🌿🌞
Here at Crewplanet, based in beautiful Riga, Latvia, we’re getting ready for one of the most magical times of the year – Līgo (aka Summer Solstice)! 🇱🇻
✨ So, what’s Līgo all about?
It’s Latvia’s way of celebrating the longest day and the shortest night of the year – with bonfires, flower crowns, singing, dancing, and a whole lot of good vibes. Think of it as nature’s birthday party, Latvian-style! 🎉
🔥 Ancient roots, modern fun
The name “Līgo” means to sway – just like the way people dance or the way bonfire flames flicker in the night. It’s been around for hundreds of years, even before Latvia became Latvia!
People light fires to chase away bad luck, sing traditional songs (yes, all night long!), and wear oak leaf and flower crowns – not just for the ‘Gram, but to bring luck and strength. 💪🌼
🌊 What’s the link to the sea?
We’re a maritime crew, so of course we found the sea connection! 🌊
Līgo is all about nature, light, and safe journeys – just like the sea has always been. For centuries, sailors would look to the sun and stars to guide them safely across the waves. And just like Līgo fires protect homes and bring good luck, seafarers once believed in lighting fires before voyages for safe travel.
Many Latvians even celebrate Līgo by the river or seaside, making it the perfect mix of nature, tradition, and marine spirit!
🌟 Fun Līgo facts:
• The mythical fern flower only blooms on Līgo night… and if you find it, legend says you’ll get happiness and good fortune! (No pressure 😅)
• Everyone eats Jāņu cheese (with caraway seeds!) and drinks locally brewed beer 🍻
• It's a national holiday — even the most serious sea captains take a break!
