🌍 Today, we had training on changes to the migration system and new legal regulations related to the employment of foreign nationals.
What are the most important things to know?
1. From now on, the employer only needs to submit a mediation letter to the Migration Department, regardless of whether it is a change of employer or an application for a new temporary residence permit.
The application is completed through the candidate’s personal account after authentication, which includes uploading a copy of the passport and a photo of the candidate’s face.
2. An appointment at the Migration Department, both for individuals already in Lithuania and for those applying from abroad, can only be booked after the Migration Department approves the mediation letter.
The approval process for the mediation letter may take up to 5 working days.
This means that, unlike before, it will no longer be possible to arrive and submit all documents in one day. Everything will need to be planned in advance.
3. Starting from November 1, 2026, it will no longer be possible to apply for a Lithuanian temporary residence permit while holding a Schengen visa or work visa issued by another country.
However, applications will still be accepted if the person holds a residence permit issued by another European Union country or applies from their country of origin. Please note that VFS centers are currently closed in many countries.
4. Citizens of Belarus will be required to provide the original military service record book and employment record book, along with translations into Lithuanian.
5. Controls related to unpaid leave are being further tightened. If the permitted periods are exceeded, temporary residence permits may be actively revoked.
