विनोबा भावे एक महान् विचारक, समाज सुधारक, स्वतंत्रता कार्यकर्ता और लेखक थे। महात्मा गांधी के अनुयायी होने के नाते विनोबा ने अहिंसा और समानता के अपने सिद्धांतों का जीवनभर पालन किया। सन् 1958 की है, जब तेलंगाना के पोचमपल्ली गांव के हरिजनों ने विनोबा भावे से अपने जीवन यापन के लिए 80 एकड़ भूमि देने का अनुरोध किया तब आचार्य विनोबा भावे ने जमींदारों से आगे आकर गरीबों को भूमि दान करने के लिए कहा इसे भूदान आंदोलन कहा गया। भूदान का अर्थ भूमि को उपहार में दे देना होता है।
उन्होंने इस आंदोलन से 44 लाख एकड़ भूमि दान में ली और उससे लगभग 13 लाख गरीबों की मदद की। इस भूदान आंदोलन से उन्होंने पूरी दुनिया का ध्यान अपनी तरफ खींचा।
विनोबा भावे प्रथम “रेमन मैग्सेसे” पुरस्कार प्राप्त करने वाले पहले पांच व्यक्तियों में भी शामिल थे। उन्हे 1983 में मरणोपरांत भारत के सर्वोच्च नागरिक सम्मान “भारत रत्न” से भी सम्मानित किया गया।
