In honor of the inauguration of President Yoon Suk-yeol today, the 12th South Korean president, here's a bit of presidential trivia!

Three countries currently have presidential offices and residences that are named after colors, but it will soon be two!

One of President Yoon's plans is to move both the presidential office and the official presidential residence out of the Blue House, and both moves are currently underway. The offices will be relocated to Yongsan, an area associated with a US military base until recently, and the presidential residence will be moved into the current foreign minister's residence. The Blue House, named for the beautiful blue roof tiles, will be opened to the public.

So what are the 3 colorfully-named government offices?
-- South Korea: Cheong Wa Dae (the Blue House)
--Argentina: Casa Rosada (the Pink House)
--USA: the White House

We have seen HUNDREDS of resumes from aspiring ESL teachers. How can you make someone spend more than a few seconds looking at yours?

While there isn't one right way to design a resume, there are definitely some best practices when it comes to designing a resume with ESL teaching in mind. You need to make it clear, neat, and easy to pick out the important information.

Check our the resume section of our "Application Guides" page for more details and resume samples. We also have guides on which type of picture to submit for your application photo, how to shoot an intro video, and how to start gathering the documents you'll need to get an E-2 visa from your specific country.

There are 3 songs that immediately "spring" to mind during the months of March and April in Korea:

🎵"봄 날 (Spring Day)" by BTS (2017)
Probably the most well-known to international audiences is "Spring Day" by K-pop giant BTS. If you've never listened to the lyrics, you may be surprised to discover the song is a reflection on love, loss, and longing for the past.
-Key phrase: 보고 싶다 = to miss (Bogo shipda, literally "to want to see")

🎵"봄봄봄 (Spring Spring Spring)" by Roy Kim (2013)
This infectiously happy and upbeat song about new spring love is nearly ten years old but is still a spring music staple. It's fairly simple lyrics make it a great song for those trying to learn Korean through pop songs.
-Key phrase: 봄이 왔네요 = Spring has come. (Bomi watneyo)

🎵"벚꽃 엔딩 (Cherry Blossom Ending)" by 버스커 버스커 (2012)
This is another older song that never actually gets old. It's an upbeat song about walking with a a loved one though a cherry blossom filled street. True to the name of the group, this song is enormous popular for buskers to play in busy public places.
-Key phrase: 벚꽃 잎 = cherry blossom petals (beotkkot ip)

Cassidy, an American teacher who has spent the last year teaching kindergarten and elementary students in Korea, weighs in on her favorite spring song: "Definitely BTS's 'Spring Day', but Busker Busker is a must too."

What's your favorite Korean spring song? Are we missing any? Let us know in the comments below!

We had a fantastic info session with Marist College students earlier this week about how to get started teaching English in Korea. If your university or organization would be interested in having us come speak about living and teaching abroad, let us know!

At tonight's virtual event Abby Milone '16 taught us a lot about South Korea and her experiences working there. Thanks so much for meeting with us Abby!

➡ My students won't listen!
➡ My students can't speak ANY English!
➡ My students are scared of me!

Are you struggling with your new classes? Maybe you've never taught phonics before, maybe you've never taught 5 year olds before, or maybe you've never taught before at all!

No matter how experienced you are, each class you have will present itself with its own unique set of challenges. YOU CAN DO IT and we are here to support you!

Join us on Google Meets on Thursday, March 31 @8:30pm KST for a Classroom Management Roundtable. Bring your classroom management struggles or some of your own wisdom and experiences to share and we will bounce ideas off of each other to make us all better (and less stressed) teachers. It will be hosted by Abby from Kaja Teacher Recruiting and Vanessa M., a trained teacher who currently works with kindergarten and elementary students in Korea.

This session is opened to all teachers who are currently in Korea, whether you've been here for a week, a month, or more than a year. Just click on the Google Meets link at the time of the event to join: https://meet.google.com/owd-ufem-xuo
RSVP appreciated, but not required. Leave a comment below if you're planning to join.

If you're interested in teaching in Korea, but not currently doing so, leave a comment below! If there is enough interest, we will schedule a general info session about how to get started teaching English in Korea. (And if you're a Marist College student, you're in luck! Check out the Marist College Career Services page for more information on our virtual event next week.)

Over the last two months, you've probably been woken up by one of the campaign trucks blaring music and promotional videos on a Saturday morning. You've also seen the banners taking over every street corner, and you've probably also noticed the carefully-arranged posters (often outside schools) in order of the candidate's party number.

Well, it's finally Election Day! As a foreigner living in Korea, you may not be able to vote, but it's still good to know the basics about the top candidates. Yonhap News published a very informative English article that can help you understand their stances in greater detail: https://en.yna.co.kr/view/AEN20220303008300315

Meet Pricsilla from South Africa!

Pricsilla just finished her week-long quarantine. She went to her school in Gwangju for the first time to prepare for her classes on Wednesday. We had a simple but lovely meal after, where Pricsilla tried kimbap for the first time. Here are some of her first impressions:

On the food: kimbap (김밥)👍, pickled radish (danmuji/단무지) 👎, stir fried fish cake (eomuk bokkeum/어묵볶음) 👍

On the city: "I will basically never have to leave this area. I can walk to everything. I thought I might be bored, but I'm never going to be bored. There's so much to do here!"

On the apartment: "It's in such a peaceful area."

On the school: "It's so lovely! My coworkers are so nice. One even helped me buy a new laptop since mine stopped working."

On starting to teach Wednesday: "I'm so nervous!"

Beat wishes to Pricsilla and all of our other teachers starting on March 2!

What better way to celebrate Valentine's Day than with a love lock at Namsan Tower?

One of Seoul's most iconic attractions is also one of its most romantic. While Seoul Namsan Tower is a great place to visit any time of year, it might be a little extra special on Valentine's Day with your SO.
You can bring or purchase a "love lock" to seal your love forever. Write a message of love on the lock, fasten it onto a railing, and throw away the key (actually deposit it in the provided box) so it can't be broken.

Even if that's not your thing, you can still take an elevator to the top and enjoy a drink or a meal while taking in the unequaled view of Seoul.

When you're in Korea you'll probably want to:
➡ order from Coupang (like Amazon)
➡ order food on delivery apps
➡ join Kakao Talk
➡ call a taxi
➡ reserve bus tickets
➡ use Kakao Maps without WiFi
➡ transfer money
➡ stream music and videos
➡ accumulate member points at shops

if you do, you're going to need a Korean cell phone number!

There's an app for everything, but unfortunately in Korea, most of them require you to enter and verify your cell phone number. Your mobile phone number is tied to your ARC (ID) card and serves as a method of identity verification. The first thing you should do after getting your ARC is to get a phone plan. But which network is the best? What do you need to set up a phone plan? Which kind of phone plan is right for you? And what should you do for your first month while you're waiting for your ARC card?

Happy Lunar New Year!
For those not familiar with Seollal (설날), here is a brief overview of one of the two most important holidays in Korea.

While both January 1st and Lunar New Year are national holidays in Korea, the Lunar New Year is more. The main celebration usually happens on the day itself, which of course changes every year on the Gregorian calendar but is always in January or February. However, you'll also have the day before and the day after off, as Koreans typically spend those days traveling to and from their parents' homes. This usually combines with the weekend to give you four or five consecutive days off for travelling too.

새해 복 많이 받으세요!
