_WHAT'S THE VALUE OF A GOOD CV?

It's 7.51PM. It's getting quite late but one of our consultants, Sheillah, is still in the office. In fact, we're the 3 of us. Each trying to meet some client's deadline.

Sheillah is shortlisting for the role of Assistant Procurement Manager with one of our clients. It's a relatively senior role considering how big this client is. They're listed in NSE. So, we never take chances. We are thorough in our process. Sheillah has over 500 CVs to go through, already done with 100. It's quite a manual process. Not because we cannot automate and make our work easier, but we know should we do that, over 70% candidates will never stand a chance. They will be spewed out. Why? Your CV looks so bad. You have not paid much attention to it. No content. No coherence. No structure. No communication. It's a piece of a mediocre document.

Sheillah spends less than 30 seconds scanning on each CV. Quite a short time but she's got a lot to go through. And this is not the only assignment on her desk. So far, of the 107 CVs she's looked, she has picked only 2 potential candidates.

Not that we don't have good, qualified and experienced candidates. But it's a labour of pain going through their CVs. You can hardly tell much from their CVs. So, we PASS.

We decided to assist candidates in CV writing when we sent our client a list of very good candidates for the role of Financial Accountant. They sent an email back that the candidates' CVs were too long and incoherent and that it didn't meet their requirements. So, all the candidates were disqualified. It was so sad for us especially that the candidates had waited with so much anticipation and we had spent hell of time to shortlist.

Yet when we tell candidates to talk to us we help them re-write their CVs, they're hesitant. Others say the Ksh 1,500 we charge is too much. You lose opportunities because of something so little. You need to talk to us. We've got dedicated Consultants who wakes up each day with a single intent - to help you craft winning CVs that gets you noticed and wins you interviews with prospective employers.

DO NOT attach your certificates on your email when applying for a job.

On extremely rare occasions will a potential employer ask that you attach your documents (other than CV and cover letter) when sending an application. Unless this instruction is very express, don't attach other documents.

Most of these documents we attach are scans of our certificates and other supporting documents and they come in very heavy formats like PNG, JPEG etc. Such emails can easily be rejected or sent to spam box. We see candidates attaching even 20 documents and you struggle to know which of these is the CV, which is the only most critical document when applying for a job.

Attaching all these documents is a big mistake. DO NOT. Once you're invited for the interview, you can present your certificates.

Simple Mistakes candidates make during job applications.

MISTAKE #1
You fail to indicate the position you're applying on the email subject line.

Most, if not all, job adverts always have an instruction that the candidate should quote the job title being applied for on the email subject line. Unfortunately some applicants send applications without the subject OR they insert a story line in the subject area like, 'Please find attached documents'.

Companies and recruiting firms shortlist for positions based on the subject header because apparently, they have many other applications for different roles. The only way to know what position you're applying for is checking your subject line. No one has time to open your application and start figuring out what position you intended to apply. No one. If your application do not have a proper subject line, it will end straight into the trash bin. If you're applying for an Accountant role, please clearly and simply indicate, "ACCOUNTANT" on the subject line. Avoid other stories.

_Is your CV ATS compliant?

Companies are increasingly using Applicant Tracking System (ATS) in their hiring process. ATS is a computer software that allows the company to electronically screen and trim resumes from the incoming flood, saving hiring managers many hours of time while still finding qualified candidates.
