Lucy was standing at the graduation stage, lighter, taller, somehow like she had grown herself in time to step forward.
She carried happiness that wasn’t loud but real: the kind that comes from attaining an important goal, and for her, that goal was graduating with a master's degree.
She made a point to herself that she could win.
She dreamt of this beautiful day seven years ago, but then it felt somehow impossible given the circumstances of her life then.
It was in her second year, taking her degree at Kenyatta University, when her life shifted in a way that no syllabus had prepared her for.
Two pink lines appeared in the pregnancy test she had taken in the hostel bathroom. She stood there, hands shaking, heart racing, as she experienced a unique life moment, where everything changes within a second.
Motherhood was calling, her relationship with her boyfriend was facing storms as she had recently caught him cheating.
Her father threw her out of their home when he received the news and firmly stated he wouldn't pay her school fees going forward.
Her boyfriend rejected the pregnancy and ended their relationship.
She was forced to cut short her study and find her place where she could bring forth her baby and nurture her.
Her aunty, who lived upcountry, allowed her to stay at her place, but her aunty was struggling financially, so she had to look further, and when she did, she met David, a father of two, a widower, and a bit older but financially doing well.
She was looking for a refuge, and David provided not only that but also love and peace. And so love came ringing to her ears, and she danced to the tune.
She got pregnant again; her firstborn was barely 2 years old. But this time, it wasn't as dark as before, as David was fully there for her and gave her maximum support.
However, life is full of mystery, and sometimes things happen.
Her brother called her to inform her that their mom was no more.Just when she was seeing light at the end of the tunnel, grief arrived without any mercy.
Her mom was her greatest cheerleader. Even when she messed up and was chased from the house by her dad, her mom kept reminding her that she would still achieve her dreams. That she believed in her.
Things got tough after losing her mum. Lucy remembered that she has a great friend, Jesus, and she prayed for strength and direction, and He answered her prayers.
She discussed with her husband, David, matters to do with her pending education and agreed that she would finish her undergraduate degree and immediately enroll for a master's degree.
She fiercely pursued her dream, and today was the greatest day of her life. She was graduating with a master's degree and was looking ahead to a future filled with many possibilities!
