Overcoming the challenges of job hunting.
In my earlier article I shared my thoughts on why job hunting is not a joke (sorry.. Why job hunting is a challenging task).
So, does that mean you fold your hands and sit back pitying yourself?Absolutely not. You need a job. I assume you are not into starting your own business (still that's a job).
Follow me now as I point you to the preliminaries of how to rise above the mentioned and many more challenges.
1.Learn to trust in God. This is for those who believe in God. (And I bet you don't have a single reason not to believe).
Sorry am not about to start a sermon (preaching is my spiritual part_time calling) but during my job hunt I learned to trust in God. If I will ever forget to trust in God, my wife won't. She waited on God for seven years after graduating from college. The story is long but if you like your Bible, or if your pastor does, you must have heard these:
a) Is anything too hard for the LORD?
b) Nothing is impossible with God
c) He who began the good work in you is faithful to bring it to completion.
GOD is faithful and able to carry you through. Ask some Bible characters like Joseph, Shadrack, Meshack and Abednego.
Every good gift comes from above.
GOD gave me a job, He gave my wife a job, He has given to many others who have trusted in him . he wants to give you your job!
Oops!Let me preach on another platform.
2.Never give up on and/or compromise on your dreams and values. I wish I had enough airtime to tell you how someone wanted me to sell out my wife for her job after six years of her hunting for a job. Everyone I have told the full story laughed and felt sorry for us. The reason we said no to that foolishness was not that I was afraid of losing my lover.... INTEGRITY.. is what was at stake.
Stand for what you believe in. Follow your God given dream.
3.Seek professional guidance. I won't emphasize this because am going to force you to. Not violently of course but by opening your eyes to realize how critical it is.
4.Be smart, creative and proactive. And ensure you are at par with the changes in the rules of the game and the methods employers are employing. It is high time you fastened your safety belt and shelved some of the old school methods you have been using to look for a job. I never used to like anything IT and social media (I won't tell you how hard my friends have worked for me to sign up on some of the basic social media)
Do you want to do what your grandpa taught your dad in 1963 and expect to land your dream job in 2016?
5.Reading never ends. My brother /mentor Dr OB insists. The last time we sat together for a cup of tea he said it to me again the 1000th time. There are a lot of books out there on job hunting. (Or wait for mine.. In the kitchen warming up). Sorry you said to books "till death unites us again" when you stepped out of college. Should I then tell you to just type "job search" on Google and see what comes up?
You want to lead the park and win that job? Readers are leaders. Apologies to friends from the center of Kenya (I used to think central Kenya is at the very geographical center of Kenya)Am not sure you can say "readers are leaders".. no prejudice please.
6.Aim to leave the job market ASAP. You were not meant to be a permanent member of KTN. . Kenya Tarmacking Network. Again not referring in any way to and without any prejudice to Standard Media Group.. I have a very big friend there. Am committed to helping you do that.
7.Say no to laziness and giving up. You are a winner and not a loser. Didn't we agree that with God all things are possible?
No employer wants a lazy person on board. You don't want to look for a job but you want to work? mmmmmm? ...........
Please allow me to rest here for now I this. I will be more detailed in a future article on how to stay in the game, motivated to win the job you want.
See you in your office.
