At Mirai Africa, we receive thousands of CVs from job seekers every month—many of which, unfortunately, don’t make it to the shortlist. And no, it’s not always about qualifications. Often, it comes down to a few simple but costly mistakes.
Let’s talk about the CV blunders that might be standing between you and your next interview.
1. Using the Same CV for Every Job Application- For example, applying for an HR Assistant position on Monday, then a Project Coordinator role on Friday—with the exact same CV—is a red flag. Most companies use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), which quickly scan and eliminate CVs that don’t match keywords in the job description.
Why don't you take a few minutes to customize your CV for each role? Highlight relevant skills, tweak your career summary, and match the language of the job post. It could make all the difference.
2. Using Passive, Vague Language- often see lines like: “In charge of social media management.” What did you actually achieve? Employers want to know the impact you made, not just your duties. Tailor your CV to show results. Use action verbs like managed, improved, launched, led, or executed.
3. Spelling and Grammar Mistakes- This one may seem minor, but it’s a big deal. Spelling errors scream unprofessional. They send the message that you lack attention to detail—or worse, that you're not serious about the role.
Don’t hit send right away. Take a break, come back to your CV with fresh eyes, and you’ll catch more errors. Even better—ask someone to proofread it for you.
Your CV is your first impression. Make it count. A little extra effort could be the reason you land your next big role!
