Residents of Bambeni village, Ka-Dzumeri outside Giyani were left shocked on Monday morning after a female elephant was spotted roaming near the R529 road, at the same location where a young bull elephant was killed a few weeks ago.

According to a reliable source who spoke to Giyani View, the female elephant is believed to have returned to mourn her calf that was allegedly killed by rangers in the area.

A former ranger, who spoke to Giyani View on condition of anonymity, said elephants are highly emotional animals that are known to grieve and mourn their dead.

“Elephants behave much like humans when they lose one of their own. They mourn and often return to the place where the death occurred,” the former ranger explained.

It is believed that the female elephant came back to the exact spot where the young bull was killed in Bambeni village next to the R529 road.

Giyani View can confirm that rangers are currently tracking the elephant following reports of the sighting earlier this morning.

Meanwhile, some residents have reportedly gathered in anticipation, carrying axes and knives with the hope of sharing the meat should the animal be killed.

Authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the elephant’s movements or the measures being taken to ensure public safety.

Joy Wanjiru Gathigia, a 16-year-old Form Three student at Kenya High School, has been found alive, bringing relief to her family and the wider Kenyan public after a six-week search that gripped the nation.

Joy went missing on April 1, 2026, the school's closing day for the Easter holiday. Her brother Denis Muhoro picked her up from the school at around 10am, escorted her to the 2NK Sacco matatu stage in Nairobi's CBD, and she boarded a vehicle to Nyeri at approximately 11am. She never arrived home.

Her mother, Esther Githigia, said the matatu driver confirmed they arrived in Nyeri town at around 2:30pm, but Joy did not alight at her usual Skuta stage, about three kilometres from Nyeri town, and instead went all the way to Nyeri town, a change her family struggled to explain.

The alarm deepened when her belongings began turning up. Her first bag was found near the Ragati River, and a second bag containing her uniform was found in Karatina near the railway station.

CCTV footage later captured Joy at approximately 6:37pm in the Saigoni area near River Ragati, walking towards Karatina town, still carrying a bag. Just nine minutes later, she appeared on camera again, this time in the company of an unidentified man, walking towards the Ragati River bridge. That was the last confirmed sighting before her disappearance.

Railway location chief Dadson Ithiru led search operations in Karatina as days stretched into weeks with no sign of Joy. The case drew nationwide attention and an outpouring of public concern on social media.

Joy has now been found alive, approximately six weeks after she vanished. The full circumstances of where she was and what happened during that period have not yet been publicly disclosed. Pictured below is the photo her family shared when she went missing, alongside a photo of Joy today following her recovery.
