What children in UHNW families actually value in a nanny

It’s probably not what you think.

Not luxury.
Not the newest toys.
Not extravagant experiences.

What they value most is often much simpler:

→ Emotional safety
A nanny who makes them feel understood, secure, and safe to be themselves.

→ Consistency
The same calm presence, boundaries, and expectations, even when life around them is constantly changing.

→ Predictability
Knowing what comes next. Knowing who will be there. Knowing they can rely on their caregiver.

→ Attention & presence
Not just being in the room, but genuinely noticing them. Listening. Engaging. Being emotionally available.

For children growing up in UHNW families, childhood can look very different from what most of us know.

Frequent travel, multiple homes, busy schedules, private schools, and a team of adults around them can mean that there is a lot of change in their day-to-day lives.

That makes a nanny’s consistency even more valuable.

Sometimes, the most valuable thing a nanny can offer is something money can’t buy:

A safe, steady, trusted adult who shows up consistently.

What do you think matters most to a child who already has everything they could possibly want?

“Job security” can feel like a strange concept when you're a nanny.

You sign the contract.
You give notice at your current job.
You turn down other families.
You make plans around a position you believe is secure.

Maybe you've been there for weeks.
Maybe you've been there for years.
And then something changes.

You get a message:
“We’ve decided to go in a different direction.”
“We need to make some changes.”
“Our circumstances have changed.”
“We don't think this is going to work anymore.”

And just like that.

No job.
No income.
And you're back to looking for work.

And the hardest part?

You thought you were secure.
You had a contract.
You thought you could finally breathe.

And then you're the one who has to figure it all out.
And sometimes, there's no easy way back to the life you just left behind.
The nanny is often the one left carrying the consequences.

But in nannying, a signed contract doesn't always feel as secure as it should.

Sometimes things change quickly.
Sometimes without warning.
Sometimes after you've been with a family for years.
And sometimes you don't even see it coming.

That's what job security can look like in nannying.

You can be employed.
You can be settled.
You can have years behind you.

And still have that little question mark hanging over your position.

How secure am I, really?

Maybe that's why “job security” can feel like such a strange concept in nannying.

You have a job.

You just can't always switch off the part of your brain that knows how quickly things can change.

Have you ever had a job you relied on change unexpectedly and leave you scrambling?

The best nanny employers do this differently

☆ They communicate clearly.

☆ They trust the nanny's expertise.

☆ They set realistic expectations.

☆ They follow through on agreements.

☆ They give constructive feedback.

☆ They respect professional boundaries.

☆ They value the nanny's time.

☆ They include the nanny in relevant decisions.

☆ They raise concerns directly and respectfully.

☆ They honor the agreed-upon terms of employment.

☆ They pay fairly and on time.

☆ They understand that appreciation isn't a substitute for fair employment.

Being a great nanny employer isn't all that complicated, after all.

The key is to understand that the nanny-employer relationship is a two-way street.

Have you found the unicorn nanny employer who gets it?

NANNY ANTICIPATION IS A SIXTH SENSE.

And it’s one of the hardest parts of the job to explain to someone who hasn’t been a nanny.

Because sometimes you don’t know how you know.

You just do.

You notice more. You pick up on more. You start to see things coming without having to think about it.

It’s not overthinking.

It’s not being anxious.

It’s not trying to be one step ahead of everyone.

It’s that strange little instinct that comes from knowing a household so well.

And after a while, it becomes second nature.

Almost invisible.

Which is the irony of it.

The better you are at anticipating, the less anyone notices you’re doing it.

And maybe that’s why it’s so difficult to explain just how much a great nanny is actually doing.

What’s something you’ve handled so seamlessly that the family probably never realised it needed handling?

Nannying can be a very fulfilling job and still leave you completely drained by the end of the day.

You can love the children you care for.
You can enjoy your job.
You can feel lucky to do what you do.
And still have very little left by the end of the day.

It’s the constant presence.
The constant engagement.
The mental energy it takes to be attentive, patient, and present all day.

It’s the thinking ahead.
The constant adjusting.
The big emotions.

And sometimes, even after you’ve given everything you have all day, you go home feeling like you didn’t do enough.

But that’s the part people don’t always see.

Nannying isn’t just playing with kids. It’s physical, emotional, mental, and sometimes incredibly overstimulating work.

And being exhausted doesn’t mean you’re ungrateful.
Needing a quiet evening doesn’t mean you don’t love your job.
Having days where you’re counting down until bedtime doesn’t make you a bad nanny.

You can love this work deeply and still need to recharge from it.

Nannies, what leaves you most drained by the end of the day?

How to Avoid Nanny Job Search Burnout

Looking for your next nanny job can start to feel like a full-time job itself. Between applications, interviews, follow-ups, and waiting for replies, it’s easy to feel completely drained.

Here are a few ways to protect your energy while searching:

1. Set job-search hours.
You don’t need to spend all day refreshing job boards. Give yourself a set amount of time each day for applications, then step away.

2. Be selective.
You don’t have to apply for every position you see. Focus on jobs that actually match your experience, availability, values, and expectations.

3. Focus on jobs that are actually a good fit.
Be honest with yourself about what you have to offer and whether it matches what the family is looking for. You don’t have to be the right fit for every job. You just need to find the jobs where you are.

4. Set realistic expectations.
Before investing time in a job opportunity, take a moment to consider whether it is realistically possible for you. Look at the requirements, logistics, and circumstances of the position and make sure it works for your situation.

5. Spend your energy where you have a real chance.
Ask yourself whether your profile truly aligns with what this family is looking for. If you don’t meet several of the family’s key requirements, it may be better to move on rather than spend hours crafting an application for a job you’re unlikely to get.

6. Don’t apply just for the sake of applying.
There won’t always be a new job worth applying for every day, and that’s okay. Some days you might find several interesting positions, and other days you might find none. That’s normal. The right opportunity may simply not be available yet.

7. Don’t take rejection personally.
A family choosing another candidate doesn’t mean you aren’t a great nanny. Sometimes it simply comes down to experience, schedule, location, personality, or another factor outside your control.

8. Take a break when you need one.
It’s okay to have a day where you don’t apply to anything. Rest is not falling behind.

Remember: you’re not just looking for a job, you’re looking for the right fit. And that can take a little time.

The goal isn’t to apply to as many nanny jobs as possible. It’s to find the right one.

Quality over quantity. A focused job search is a more sustainable job search.
